Why was NCIS: Hawaii cancelled? Its ratings beat shows that survived
CBS pulled the plug on NCIS: Hawai'i in April 2024, three seasons in, weeks after the season 3 finale had already been shot. The cast found out from the trades. So did the showrunners.

Here's what happened
NCIS: Hawai'i averaged 7.8 million viewers in Nielsen's seven-day linear ratings and about 10 million over 35 days across platforms — the highest-rated show CBS canceled that year. The network's stated reasons were cost, schedule, and franchise crowding. Shooting on location in Hawai'i was expensive, and 7.8 million doesn't crack the top tier at CBS.
What CBS actually said
At a press briefing in Los Angeles, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach walked reporters through the calculus:
"We have to evaluate the financials and the performance overall," she told reporters in 2024.
Asked whether the decision could be reversed — CBS had un-canceled S.W.A.T. twice — she said no.
Why good ratings weren't enough
- Location costs — filming in Hawai'i put the per-episode price well above a mainland procedural.
- A crowded franchise — NCIS, NCIS: Sydney, and NCIS: Origins were all on the 2024–25 board, with Tony & Ziva in development.
- Schedule churn — Reisenbach's stated priority was keeping the lineup fresh, and Hawai'i aired Mondays at 10 p.m., behind the flagship.
- Failed haggling — Deadline reported that a budget-trimmed season 4 was floated and didn't come together.
Blue Bloods and CSI: Vegas got similar news in the same window. Vanessa Lachey's Instagram response ran to three words: "Gutted, confused, blindsided."
How it ended
"Divided We Conquer" aired May 6, 2024 — written as a season finale, broadcast as a series finale. It pulled 5.41 million viewers, the second-biggest audience of the season, and closed with Maggie Shaw waiting in Jane Tennant's living room. That thread never got picked up.
At 54 episodes, Hawai'i is the shortest-lived show in the NCIS franchise.
