Why was John killed off in Bridgerton? Victor Alli knew before viewers ever met him
Bridgerton had never killed off a major character — until season 4, part 2, which hit Netflix on February 26, 2026. At the end of episode 6, Lord John Stirling, the Earl of Kilmartin, mentions "only a small headache," goes to take a nap before dinner, and never wakes up. Francesca finds him.
So why do that, mid-season, in the middle of Benedict and Sophie's romance? Because it was always the plan.
It's straight from the books
John's death is the entire premise of Francesca's story. In Julia Quinn's sixth novel, When He Was Wicked, John dies early on, and Francesca's great romance unfolds years later with his cousin Michael — reimagined in the show as Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza).
Showrunner Jess Brownell told People the timing was chosen deliberately, letting audiences get to know Francesca and John as a couple first and giving the show room "to allow ourselves enough time to properly grieve John." Episode 7, "The Passing Winter," is devoted to exactly that.
What actually killed him
A ruptured cerebral aneurysm. The show keeps it vague on screen — mourners only murmur about a man dying after a "headache" — but Victor Alli has confirmed the cause, and Quinn spelled it out in an author's note in When He Was Wicked: a congenital weak spot in a blood vessel of the brain, and nothing could have been done to save him. Sudden, silent, and medically accurate to the era's helplessness.
Victor Alli knew before you did
Alli was told John's fate as soon as he was cast — before the character ever appeared in season 3 back in 2024. He played two full seasons knowing exactly where it ended, and deliberately played against it:
"John doesn't know he's gonna die. I know he is, but he doesn't know," Alli told Cosmopolitan in 2026.
He did lobby for something flashier, though — he told Netflix 's Tudum, "I wanted to fall off a horse." He got a nap instead.
What John's death sets up
- Francesca's future — she's left navigating grief, widowhood, and the Kilmartin earldom's succession.
- Michaela — she stays in Mayfair to support Francesca, then returns to Scotland without saying goodbye in the season 4 finale. That unfinished business is the fuse.
- Seasons 5 and 6 — When He Was Wicked and Eloise's book, To Sir Philip, With Love, are the confirmed inspirations, in an order Netflix hasn't announced yet.
