Why was Jenny killed off in NCIS? She was dying either way
For three seasons, Director Jenny Shepard ran NCIS from the top floor — sharp, stubborn, and carrying a history with Gibbs the show never let us forget. Then, in May 2008, she walked into an abandoned diner in the California desert and never walked out. The reason had two layers: one behind the camera, one baked into the story.
The real reason: Lauren Holly wanted out
Holly joined NCIS in season 3 (2005) expecting a six-episode arc. She stayed for 48 episodes, but the job soured. Creator Donald P. Bellisario — the man who hired her — left after season 4 over creative differences with star Mark Harmon, and Holly missed him. In a statement on her website, she admitted the Director 's chair had stopped being interesting to play. Then came the exit:

She wasn't exaggerating. The writers didn't just kill Jenny. They doomed her twice.
She was dying either way
Earlier in season 5, Jenny was quietly diagnosed with a terminal illness — never named on screen, but unambiguously fatal. That's the key to understanding the finale: the writers gave a dying woman a choice between fading away in a hospital bed or going out on her feet. She chose the fight. In "Judgment Day, Part 1" (season 5, episode 18), it played out like this:
- The funeral — the death of former agent William Decker draws Jenny to Los Angeles.
- The slip — she ditches her protection detail, Tony and Ziva, on purpose.
- The diner — she and Mike Franks face a hit squad tied to a decades-old mission in Paris.
- The aftermath — Leon Vance takes over as Director and promptly splits up Gibbs' team.
Her death happens off-screen — a storm of gunfire and then silence. Vance later notes the forensics showed she went down fighting hard.
Did Holly regret leaving?
No. Asked directly in a 2016 Smashing Interviews Magazine interview, she said she hadn't — the role was only ever meant to last six episodes. She went on to Motive, Designated Survivor, and the 2024 Netflix hit Hot Frosty.
For the record: Holly originally auditioned for the role of Kate Todd, which went to Sasha Alexander — whose character was also killed off.
NCIS called Holly back two years later for Jenny. Same show, same fate.
