Why does Reacher kill Quinn instead of arresting him?
Reacher season 3, which premiered on Prime Video on February 20, 2025, is built entirely on one decision Jack Reacher made years earlier — a decision that goes against everything a military cop is supposed to do.
He had a criminal dead to rights. He didn't put cuffs on him. Here's why — and why it backfired spectacularly.
What Quinn actually did
In flashbacks, Reacher and his protégé, Sergeant Dominique Kohl, investigate a military espionage case and discover that Lieutenant Francis Xavier Quinn (Brian Tee) is selling top-secret U.S. weapons information to enemy buyers. Kohl builds enough evidence to arrest him for treason — and Reacher, wanting the collar to boost her career, sends her to make the arrest.
It goes horribly wrong. Quinn captures Kohl, tortures her, and murders her.
The real answer: revenge and guilt
Reacher doesn't kill Quinn because arresting him is impossible — Kohl's evidence made a treason case entirely winnable. He kills him because he holds himself responsible for her death. He was her commanding officer, he sent her in, and he decides that a trial isn't punishment enough for what Quinn did to her.
His mentor, Leon Garber, all but signs off on it, telling Reacher to "do it once and do it right." So Reacher marches Quinn to a cliff's edge and shoots him in the head.
There's a bigger theme underneath it, one the finale spells out: Reacher's deepest hatred is reserved for powerful men who believe consequences don't apply to them. In his eyes, Quinn — protected, connected, decorated — was exactly the kind of man who might slip the system. So Reacher became the system.
Why it was the worst mistake of his career
Here's the twist that fuels the whole season: it didn't work. Reacher used a small-caliber round, Quinn survived the fall, washed up on a beach, and was saved — with retrograde amnesia and a new identity as "Julius McCabe," running a gun-smuggling operation behind Zachary Beck's import business. The man Reacher executed for killing one person went on to torture and maim others, including cutting off Richard Beck's ear.
Does he finally finish the job?
He does. In the season 3 finale, adapted from Lee Child's 2003 novel Persuader, Reacher kills Quinn for good — this time with a shotgun, at close range, leaving nothing to chance.
