Why did Vicki leave RHOC? The real reason, explained
Vicki Gunvalson was not fired from The Real Housewives of Orange County, and she didn't walk out in a huff either. Here's what Bravo actually did to her role, what she said about it at the time, and how the situation stands now.
The exit everyone remembers as a firing was technically a resignation, and the thing that triggered it happened a full season earlier. The distinction matters more than it sounds.
Vicki Gunvalson was one of the five original Housewives when The Real Housewives of Orange County premiered on Bravo on March 21, 2006 — running Coto Insurance, living in Coto de Caza, married to Donn. She stayed full-time for thirteen seasons and 250 episodes. Then, for season 14, Bravo moved her from full Housewife to "friend of the Housewives," which in franchise terms means fewer episodes, no orange in the opening titles, and no taglines.
She lasted one season in that role.

The announcement
On January 24, 2020, Gunvalson confirmed on Instagram that she was done.
"It's been an incredible ride for 14 years and I want to thank all of you for your support, for your love and for 'whooping it up' with me along the way," she wrote.
The line that got quoted everywhere was the other one: she would always be the OG of the OC. Andy Cohen replied publicly with "OG" and a string of orange emojis. Tamra Judge announced her own departure days later, which made January 2020 look from the outside like a clear-out rather than two separate decisions.
What the demotion was actually about
Gunvalson's own position was that the reduced role was untenable rather than insulting on its own terms — at the season 14 reunion she described feeling like a has-been next to the women who still had full status. Bravo has never issued a detailed rationale. What's on the record is the surrounding context:
- Season 10, 2015 — her boyfriend Brooks Ayers built a season-long storyline around a cancer diagnosis, then admitted he had fabricated medical documents to support it.
- Seasons 11 through 13 — she stayed full-time throughout, so the scandal did not cost her the job directly.
- Season 14, 2019 — the demotion, with no on-air explanation given to the audience.
- January 2020 — the exit, by her own announcement rather than a network statement.
The practical read is that Bravo wanted the franchise's center of gravity to move and used the friend designation to do it without firing an original cast member. She declined to sit in the smaller chair.
She has the orange back
The story didn't end in 2020. Gunvalson guested in seasons 17 and 18, in 2023 and 2024, mostly reconstituting the Tres Amigas with Tamra Judge and Shannon Beador. She headlined season 2 of The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip in 2022 and returned for season 5 in 2026.
Then, at BravoCon in November 2025, Andy Cohen offered her the orange back on stage. She took it.
Season 20 premiered on Bravo on July 9, 2026, with Gunvalson as a full-time Housewife for the first time since season 13.
The season-20 lineup puts her alongside Tamra Judge, Heather Dubrow, Shannon Beador, Gina Kirschenheiter, Emily Simpson, Jennifer Pedranti, and newcomer Carmella Garcia, with guest appearances scattered through from Jeana Keough, Lauri Peterson, Jo De La Rosa, Lizzie Rovsek, and Elizabeth Lyn Vargas.
For the record: the gap between her demotion and her reinstatement ran six and a half years, and the show spent most of it without an original cast member in the opening credits.
