Why did Spencer Reid leave Criminal Minds? The real scheduling story behind Matthew Gray Gubler's absence from Evolution, and how his long-awaited return actually played out.
Matthew Gray Gubler played Dr. Spencer Reid for all 15 seasons of Criminal Minds, from 2005 to the 2020 finale. When the show came back as Criminal Minds: Evolution on Paramount+ in November 2022, the BAU's genius was missing — and stayed missing for three years, save for one appearance that lasted roughly the length of a handshake.
The showrunner's version
Showrunner Erica Messer told Deadline around the 2022 premiere that Gubler's absence came down to scheduling — his calendar and Evolution's production window didn't line up, and the presumption that he'd simply refused wasn't accurate. She's kept that line ever since, and put numbers on it for Us Weekly in 2024: the original series shot ten months a year, the revival shoots four.
"It just actually can be a scheduling nightmare to try to get anyone," Messer said.
Gubler backed the account on Ireland's The Six O'Clock Show in 2023: the revival filmed while he was shooting something else, and as for returning — "I would be honored. I would absolutely love that."

On screen, Reid was never written out. The Evolution premiere explained that the bureau had split agents up for cost efficiency, with Reid and Matt Simmons away on a confidential assignment; season 2 upgraded that to a sabbatical. His books stayed on his desk for three seasons. The FBI, apparently, doesn't clear cubicles.
The funeral and the single line
The return finally came on May 22, 2025 — season 3, episode 3, "Time to Say Goodbye." After Will LaMontagne (Josh Stewart), JJ's husband, dies suddenly, the funeral flowers arrive from the franchise 's absent legends: Hotch, Morgan, and Reid. Then Reid walks into the church in person, hugs JJ and her sons, sits in the pews with Emily, Penelope, and Rossi, and stays at the graveside after everyone else leaves.
His entire spoken contribution, when JJ says she can't believe he came:
"I'm always here for you guys."
That's it — one line in the episode, and to date one line in the entire revival. A.J. Cook, who plays JJ, personally called Gubler to ask him to come, and later defended the near-silence as deliberate: no monologue needed, it's all in looks. Gubler, for his part, said in a statement he'd cherish any chance to slip back into "my dear friend Spencer's oversized wingtips."
Will he be back?
Not imminently. Messer confirmed in May 2026 that no original-series characters appear in the next season — the compressed 10-episode run left no room to schedule anyone. And Gubler now has a structural conflict with a network attached: he stars in Einstein, a CBS procedural casting him as a crime- solving descendant of Albert Einstein, slotted for the 2026–27 season after being bumped from 2025–26.
Twenty years in, the math on Spencer Reid stands at 15 seasons, one confidential assignment, one sabbatical, one funeral, and one sentence. For a character with an eidetic memory, the franchise is being awfully economical with his dialogue.
