Why did NCIS kill off Breena? Michelle Pierce never asked to leave the show
NCIS has killed off plenty of characters across two decades — Kate Todd, Ziva David (temporarily), Ducky's whole rolodex of victims. But Breena Palmer's exit was different: no gunfire, no case file, and no goodbye scene at all. She was simply gone. Here's why the writers did it that way.
The short answer
Breena, played by Michelle Pierce since season 7, died off-screen of COVID-19 complications. The reveal came in season 18, episode 7, "The First Day," when a grieving Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) explained he had lost his wife to the virus — and that pandemic restrictions meant he couldn't even be with her at the end.
Crucially, this wasn't a contract dispute or a cast shake-up. Pierce never asked to leave. The writers chose to kill Breena off to reflect what millions of viewers were living through in 2020 — grief that arrived suddenly, at a distance, with no chance to say goodbye.
Who Breena was
- The mortician's daughter — introduced in season 7 in 2010, Breena worked in her family 's funeral home, which made her an oddly perfect match for an assistant medical examiner.
- Jimmy's wife — the two married in 2012, giving NCIS's most awkward character a genuinely happy home life.
- Victoria's mom — the couple welcomed daughter Victoria in 2015, and Jimmy has raised her alone since Breena's death.
Did Breena ever appear again?
Once — and it 's a gut-punch. In season 19, episode 13, "The Helpers" (2022), Jimmy and Kasie Hines are exposed to a deadly biotoxin, and as Jimmy fights for his life, he hallucinates Breena. She comforts him, reassures him, and essentially gives him permission to keep living. It's widely considered one of the show's best episodes of that era.
Brian Dietzen co-wrote that episode himself, shaping his character's farewell to his on-screen wife.
Where Jimmy's story went
Breena's death became the defining arc of Jimmy Palmer's later seasons. The show followed his grief realistically — the guilt, the single parenting, the slow return to life — before he eventually found a new relationship with Special Agent Jessica Knight.
As for Pierce, she's kept working, with credits including CSI: NY, Criminal Minds, Days of Our Lives, and Rules of Engagement.
For the record: Breena's death is one of the very few times NCIS wrote real-world events directly into its universe.
The writers decided the pandemic was too big to ignore. They were right — but fans still haven't fully forgiven them.
