Why did Monty die in Landman? His death was written before Jon Hamm was even cast
When Landman premiered on Paramount+ in November 2024, Jon Hamm's Monty Miller looked like the show's second lead for years to come — the slick oil boss to Billy Bob Thornton's roughneck fixer Tommy Norris. Then the season 1 finale killed him off, and fans wanted answers.
Here's the full story — and why nobody should have been surprised.
The short answer
Monty's death wasn't a firing, a feud, or a rewrite. It was baked into the character before Jon Hamm ever signed on. Thornton confirmed as much at the Newport Beach TV Fest in 2025, calling the death a requirement of the part:
"That was pre-planned before Taylor even knew Jon was gonna be playing the part," Thornton said.
Taylor Sheridan wrote Monty Miller as a one-season character. Hamm just happened to be the star who took the job.
How Monty died on the show
Monty, president of oil giant M-Tex, suffers a heart attack in the season 1 finale and dies in his hospital bed after an unsuccessful heart transplant — off screen, with Tommy already warned it was coming. Before the end, Monty asks Tommy to take over as company president and serve as executor of his estate alongside his wife, Cami (Demi Moore).
The clues were there all season. Co-creator Christian Wallace told TV Insider in January 2025 that the writers deliberately dropped small hints throughout — Monty checking the heart rate on his watch, Cami cutting off his coffee — so the death wouldn't land completely out of nowhere.
Why Hamm only signed for one season
Simple: that's all he could give.
Hamm told The Hollywood Reporter in January 2025 that the appeal was never a long TV run — "it was the ability to work with Taylor and Billy Bob," two careers he'd been watching closely.
A contained, one-season arc with a built-in death suited everyone. No drama. No scandal. Just scheduling and a script that always ended in a hospital room.
What his death set up
Season 2, which premiered in November 2025, is built almost entirely on the hole Monty left:
- Cami takes over — Demi Moore's character inherits M-Tex as its inexperienced new owner, finally moving to the center of the show.
- Tommy becomes president — running day-to-day operations while answering to a grieving widow.
- The company is secretly broke — season 2 reveals Monty was funneling money through hidden trusts to make M-Tex look healthy. It isn't.
Monty's death didn't shrink the show. It armed it.
For the record: Moore has said the cast genuinely missed having Hamm on set — and then credited the loss to Sheridan's plan. The plan came first. It always did.
