Why are Landman seasons so short? The man who gave Yellowstone a 14-episode season keeps this one at ten
Landman has run exactly ten episodes a year since it premiered, and the third season has now slipped out of its annual slot entirely. Here's what actually caps the order, from the Texas heat to the one man writing all of it.
Ten episodes in 2024, ten in 2025, and season three not arriving in 2026 at all. The constraint isn't the network's appetite.
Landman premiered on Paramount+ on 17 November 2024 and ran ten episodes through 12 January 2025. Season 2 ran ten more, from 16 November 2025 to 18 January 2026. Paramount+ renewed it in December 2025. The show is a hit — season 1 opened at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, season 2 improved to 83%, and it has spent most of two years on the service's most-watched lists.
Sheridan's own ceiling is ten
Taylor Sheridan gave Yellowstone a 14-episode fifth season, the longest order of his career — and it took two years and a split to deliver it. Eight episodes aired between November 2022 and January 2023. The remaining six aired from 10 November to 15 December 2024, almost two years later. The full series ran 53 episodes across five seasons.

The rest of his catalog sits at or under ten per season. That number is not a creative preference so much as an arithmetic consequence of how he works.
"For me, writers rooms haven't worked," Sheridan said in 2023, when the WGA pushed for minimum staffing. He also told The Hollywood Reporter that year: "The freedom of the artist to create must be unfettered."
His producing partner David Glasser has put the output in plainer terms — "Taylor writes scripts like you or I have a cup of coffee" — and puts the Yellowstone total alone at 60 scripts. Billy Bob Thornton, who carries Landman as Tommy Norris, told the same story from the other side in December 2025: "We don't understand how he writes so much and so quickly."
One writer, several shows running concurrently, ten episodes each. The math closes.
The heat is a hard production limit
Landman shoots on location in Texas, around working rigs and open ground, and it releases in November. That combination forces production into the hottest months of the year.
"Twelve-hour days in 100-plus degree weather," co-creator Christian Wallace said of the shoot. "That's the big struggle from a production standpoint for us being on set every day."
A longer order would extend that window further into the Texas summer, with a cast and crew already working outdoors in triple digits.
What the season 3 delay confirms
The third season was originally set to film in spring 2026. It slipped to a September 2026 start, with production running into the first quarter of 2027 — which ends the show's annual November cycle and pushes the season to 2027. Cast member James Jordan attributed the postponement to Sheridan needing more time to finish the scripts himself.
Sheridan also stepped back from directing on season 2, having directed on season 1. A few other data points sit alongside it:
- Co-creation — Landman is credited to Sheridan and Christian Wallace, built from Wallace's Texas Monthly podcast Boomtown.
- Cast growth — season 2 added Sam Elliott and Andy Garcia to a roster already carrying Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Jon Hamm, Jacob Lofland and Michelle Randolph.
- The exception — Sheridan is planning to write with other people for the first time on the Yellowstone spin-off Marshals.
That last one is the thing to watch. If the no-writers-room rule breaks anywhere, the ten-episode ceiling is the first number that moves.
