Who was killed in Deadwood? Every death in the camp, from Wild Bill to the final episode
David Milch's Deadwood ran three seasons and 36 episodes on HBO from 2004 to 2006, plus a 2019 movie — and for a show remembered mostly for its profanity, it piled up an astonishing number of corpses. The camp killed quickly, quietly, and usually on somebody's orders.

The death that defined the show
Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) barely made it a month in camp. In season 1, episode 4 — "Here Was a Man" — the coward Jack McCall (Garret Dillahunt) shot him in the back of the head mid-poker game at Nuttall's No. 10 saloon, mirroring the real murder of August 2, 1876. McCall was then acquitted by the camp's sham jury and run out of town.
The show never really recovered from the loss. That was the point.
Season 1's body count
- The Metz family — massacred by road agents in the pilot, leaving little Sofia as the only survivor.
- Tim Driscoll — stabbed by Al Swearengen over the Garret claim.
- Brom Garret — Alma's husband, thrown off a cliff by Dan Dority on Al's orders and passed off as an accident.
- Flora and Miles Anderson — teenage grifters executed at the Bella Union; Cy Tolliver shot Miles, and Joanie shot Flora on Cy's orders.
- Magistrate Clagett — throat cut by Silas Adams.
- Jimmy Irons — drowned by Al.
- Reverend Smith — smothered by Al in the season finale, a mercy killing as the dying preacher's brain tumor consumed him.
Season 2 gets darker
Seth Bullock's young son William — his late brother's boy, raised as his own — was trampled by a runaway horse. Mose Manuel shot his own brother Charlie over their claim. Francis Wolcott, Hearst's advance man, cut the throats of Doris and Maddie at the Chez Ami while sparing Joanie, then hanged himself in the finale after Hearst cast him off. And Mr. Wu closed out the season by killing his San Francisco rival, Lee.
Season 3: Hearst's arrival
George Hearst's campaign against the camp claimed almost everyone around him. Dan Dority beat Hearst's bodyguard Captain Turner to death in a street fight. Hostetler shot himself after the feud with Steve Fields. Odell Marchbanks, Aunt Lou's son, died off-screen right after pitching Hearst a gold claim — the show heavily implies Hearst had him killed.
Whitney Ellsworth, Alma's husband, was shot at her claim on Hearst's orders. And in the series finale, after Trixie shot and wounded Hearst, Al cut the throat of the innocent Jen to pass her body off as Trixie's and save the camp.
The 2019 movie added one last name: Charlie Utter, gunned down on Hearst's orders — the death that finally brings the whole camp back together.
The series ends with Al scrubbing Jen's blood from his floor, refusing comfort: "Wants me to tell him something pretty," he mutters. In Deadwood, nobody got that.
