Who is George in Little House on the Prairie? The name belongs to two very different men
If you finished Netflix's Little House on the Prairie asking "wait, which George?" — fair. The first season, released July 9, 2026, gives the name to two significant characters, one a pillar of the town and one a ghost hanging over the whole family. Here's who's who.
George No. 1: Dr. George Tann
Dr. Tann (Jocko Sims) is Independence's only physician — the man who levels with Charles about the land office that doesn't exist, and who later saves the entire Ingalls family with quinine when malaria tears through the prairie in episode 4.
He's also real.
The historical George A. Tann was a Black frontier doctor in Kansas who treated the actual Ingalls family during their malaria outbreak around 1870, and Laura Ingalls Wilder mentions him in the original novel.
Sonnenshine has said reading about Dr. Tann as an adult raised exactly the kind of questions — who were the Black Americans living on the prairie? — that the series set out to explore.
George No. 2: George Ingalls
The other George (Connor Paton) is Charles's late younger brother, and the show's buried tragedy. Piece by piece — a sleepwalking episode here, a tense remark there — the season reveals that George ran away as a teenager to fight for the Union in the Civil War and came home deeply scarred. During his fever dreams in episode 4, Charles relives the worst of it:
- The plan — Charles intended to bring George west to Kansas with the family.
- The change of heart — he decided his brother needed treatment more than a wagon trip, and argued about it with their father (Martin Donovan).
- The loss — George overheard Charles call him "broken," ran away, and later died by suicide. Charles, who never served himself, has carried the guilt ever since.
That loss is the hidden reason the Ingalls left Wisconsin alone, with no relatives willing to join them.
The book connection
Sharp-eyed readers will recognize the second George. In Little House in the Big Woods, Uncle George is the boisterous relative who ran away to war young and still wears his army coat at the family dance.
Sonnenshine told the Television Academy that rereading that chapter as an adult changed everything: what a child reads as a quirky uncle, a grown-up recognizes as a veteran in pain — "That guy's suffering from PTSD."
Two Georges, then: one who heals the family, and one whose absence explains them.
