Which is better, Landman or Yellowstone? We scored them category by category, and it wasn't close
Taylor Sheridan built both of them: Yellowstone ran five seasons and 53 episodes from June 2018 to December 2024, while Landman is two seasons deep since November 2024 and already renewed for a third. Same creator, same cowboy hats, very different shows.
So we put them head to head, category by category. Seven rounds. One winner.
The scorecard
- Lead performance — Landman. Kevin Costner 's John Dutton was granite, but Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy Norris gets to be funny, exhausted, and quietly lethal in the same scene — and it earned him a Critics Choice nomination in December 2025. Costner also left mid-season 5. Thornton has said he'll stay as long as the show runs.
- Dialogue — Landman. Dutton speeches are sermons. Tommy's chain-smoking monologues about oil, money, and death are stand-up with a body count.
- The women — Yellowstone. Ali Larter's Angela is a force of nature, but nothing in Landman touches Kelly Reilly's Beth Dutton — the single best character in either show, now getting her own spinoff with Cole Hauser's Rip.
- Authenticity — Landman. Yellowstone drew on Sheridan's ranching life; Landman is co-created by Christian Wallace, a former roughneck whose Boomtown podcast reported from the real Permian Basin. Real rigs, real crews, real dangers.
- Scenery — Yellowstone. Montana's mountains versus the flat, dusty Permian. Not a fair fight, and Landman doesn't pretend otherwise.
- Consistency — Landman. Yellowstone opened to a 58% Rotten Tomatoes score for season 1 and ended in chaos, with its star gone before the finale. Landman has delivered two seasons that grew their audience every single week.
- Momentum — Landman. The season 2 premiere pulled 9.2 million views in two days — up 262% on season 1 and the biggest original-series premiere in Paramount+ history. The finale on January 18, 2026 beat it with 14.8 million.

The case for the old champ
Cultural footprint still belongs to Yellowstone. It was the biggest show on cable television, its season 5 premiere drew over 12 million linear viewers, and it spawned an entire universe — 1883, 1923, The Madison, and the coming Beth and Rip series. Landman hasn't produced a single spinoff. Yet.
The verdict
Yellowstone is the monument. Landman is the better show right now — sharper lead, tighter writing, real-world grounding, and an audience that keeps growing instead of saying goodbye. Even Sheridan seems to agree with the market: when his Paramount deal winds down, Landman continues under co-creator Christian Wallace.
