If you fired up the final season expecting Mavis's whole chosen family to be there, you noticed the gap fast. One-third of the trio is missing — and the show deals with it in a single line.

Where Marley went

According to season 3, episode 1: Portugal. After the events of season 2, Marley's relationship with rising politician Daphne (Jerrie Johnson) fell apart — despite the hopeful note they ended on. Heartbroken and wanting a genuinely clean slate, Marley booked a one-way ticket out of New York and started over abroad. She never appears on screen in the season, which premiered on Netflix on July 2, 2026.

That's the whole in-show explanation. Blink and you'll miss it.

The real reason Tasha Smith is absent

Scheduling. The timeline simply didn't cooperate:

  • November–December 2025 — Smith directed the Netflix movie Tis So Sweet, starring Taraji P. Henson.
  • December 2025–February 2026Survival of the Thickest filmed its third and final season in New York City.

With post-production on her directing project overlapping the shoot, there was no realistic way to fit Marley in. It wasn't a falling-out — Smith had been a series regular since season 2 and one of the show's most beloved performers.

Could she come back?

The door isn't closed. Star and co-creator Michelle Buteau addressed it directly in a 2026 interview with The Queer Review, saying more Marley stories are up to the fans:

"I'm wide open, definitely."

Since this was the final season, any return would mean a movie or revival — nothing has been announced.

Did fans notice?

Loudly. Marley's absence became one of the season's biggest talking points, especially since Mavis goes through some of the heaviest moments of the entire series — a fertility journey, a devastating loss, and finally her wedding to Luca — without her best friend in the room. Khalil (Tone Bell) carries the friendship duties solo.
