After years immersed in Dune, Denis Villeneuve explains why James Bond is the only project he’d press pause on that saga to pursue.

In a new chat with Empire, Denis Villeneuve said the thing that finally pried him away from Arrakis was a tux, a martini, and a sidearm. After years immersed in sandworms and prophecy, the filmmaker explained he needed a jolt strong enough to reset his brain — and when James Bond came calling, that was it.

“I thought, ‘When it’s done, I need a very powerful rocket to pull me away from Arrakis.’”

Villeneuve added that when the 007 offer landed, his reaction was immediate.

“Okay, this is what I need.”

The franchise is personal to him. Villeneuve has said some of his earliest movie memories are watching Bond with his father, starting with Sean Connery in Dr. No. When Amazon MGM named him director, he called Bond “sacred territory” and vowed to respect the character’s history while opening the door to new missions.

The handoff comes after No Time to Die ended Daniel Craig ’s 15-year run in 2021. Amazon MGM has since teamed with longtime stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson on the next era, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing and Steven Knight writing the screenplay. Amazon said in May that the search for Craig’s successor had officially begun; no actor has been announced.

First, finish Dune

Before Villeneuve takes aim with the Walther PPK, his space- epic trilogy wraps on December 18 with Dune: Part Three, adapted from Dune Messiah. The story jumps nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized the Imperium, finding him haunted by the cost of his rule as a conspiracy tightens around his throne.

The returning and new faces include:

Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan. Warner Bros. has already released a teaser and full trailer, and Vaughan told WIRED he caught an intimate advance screening and considers the finished film his favorite of the three.

Bond comes next for Villeneuve. For now, 007 remains uncast.
