What happened to Willie Edwards on Swamp People? He's gone from the show, not from the swamp
For over a decade, Willie Edwards was one of the steadiest hands on Swamp People — the calm, capable son of original cast member Junior Edwards, hunting the Atchafalaya Basin since the History series premiered in 2010. Then, without any announcement, he stopped showing up. Here's what's actually going on.
When did Willie leave?
Fans first noticed his absence in season 16, which wrapped in April 2025, and he didn't return for season 17, which premiered on January 7, 2026. Neither Willie nor History has ever given an official reason for the exit — no statement, no farewell episode, nothing. His seat on the boat didn't stay empty, though: his son, "Little" Willie Edwards, stepped in and now hunts alongside Jacob Landry.
Is he still hunting gators?
Very much so. In September 2024, Willie posted photos on Facebook of himself and Little Willie with a haul of big alligators, and he's reported to be running his own gator-catching business in Louisiana. Leaving a TV show and leaving the swamp are two very different things — and Willie only did one of them.

The losses behind the scenes
The Edwards family has been through a brutal stretch:
- Randy Edwards — Willie's brother and fellow cast member died in a vehicle accident in September 2018, at just 35. A family representative announced the news on Facebook, asking for privacy and prayers.
- Junior Edwards — the family patriarch and an original star of the show died on July 26, 2025, after a battle with stage 4 colon cancer. He appeared in roughly 100 episodes across seasons 1–6 and again from season 12, and is credited with pioneering the treble-hook technique the family still uses.
Little Willie broke the news of his grandfather's death himself:
"Rest easy pawpaw," he wrote on Facebook, adding that Junior was probably already running his hoop nets inside the pearly gates.
Could Willie come back?
Nothing rules it out. He's only in his early 40s, clearly still in hunting shape, and the show has a long history of cast members rotating out and back in — Junior himself left after season 6 and returned in season 12. For now, though, the Edwards legacy on Swamp People runs through Little Willie, who spent season 17 honoring Junior by working his signature treble hooks.
