What happened to Roscoe after Reacher season 1?
When Reacher rolled out of Margrave, Georgia at the end of season 1 in 2022, he left behind the best partner he's had on the show: Officer Roscoe Conklin, played by Willa Fitzgerald. Three seasons later, she still hasn't come back — not even for a phone call.
Here's why, and what the ending actually set up.
How season 1 left them
Roscoe and Reacher took down Margrave's corruption together and fell for each other along the way. But he's a drifter and she's devoted to her hometown, so they parted on good terms in the finale: Reacher suggested she run for mayor, and Roscoe gave him her number with an open invitation to call anytime.
He never called. On screen, anyway.
The real reason she's gone
It comes down to the books. Season 1 adapted Killing Floor, Lee Child's 1997 debut novel — and Roscoe never appears in any Jack Reacher book after it. Since the show drops Reacher into a new location and a new novel each season — Bad Luck and Trouble for season 2, then Maine for season 3 — there's simply no story left for a Margrave police officer. Fitzgerald knew this going in, telling Digital Spy she was always aware Roscoe was a one-season arc:
"It's nice to have the agency to know that that is a complete, finished product," she said.
Child himself has admitted the pattern stings. He told Forbes he falls "hopelessly in love" with the women he writes, then has to leave them behind when each book ends.
But Finlay came back — so why not Roscoe?
That's the sore spot for fans. Malcolm Goodwin's Oscar Finlay got a cameo in season 2, episode 4, despite also being absent from the later books — proof the writers will bend the source material for a familiar face. Roscoe even got name-checked in season 2, when Neagley brought her up to Reacher. But a mention is all she's had. In season 3, with Reacher undercover in Maine, she didn't appear at all.
Could she ever return?
The door isn't shut. Fitzgerald told Screen Rant in 2024 she'd heard nothing from the creative team but remains open to it, and showrunner Nick Santora has shown he'll deviate from the books when it serves the show. Meanwhile, Fitzgerald has stayed plenty busy — including her acclaimed lead turn in the 2024 thriller Strange Darling.
For the record: Roscoe still has Reacher's only standing invitation in the entire series. The number's out there. He just has to use it.
