What happened to Natalie on Dancing with the Stars? Enough fans doubted it that she posted the photos

She was hit in the face during a group number, and the medical team wouldn't clear her to dance. The part that needed explaining afterward was why a portion of the audience decided none of it was real.

Natalie Jolley, a 20-year-old ballroom dancer from New York, was competing on Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, ABC's spinoff in which twelve dancers live and train together in Brisbane, Australia, competing for a slot on the main show's professional roster. Robert Irwin hosts; Mark Ballas and Shirley Ballas judge, with rotating guests including Derek Hough and Witney Carson. It premiered July 13, 2026.

During rehearsals for episode three, fellow contestant Stephani Sosa caught her in the face — a combination of hand and hair, at speed, in choreography. Jolley was dizzy and in tears on camera. The medical assessment came back as a black eye and a concussion. She was not cleared, and she exited the competition on July 27, 2026, the third dancer out that season.

Why viewers didn't buy it

The skepticism came from a specific detail: Jolley appeared on stage for the elimination looking considerably less damaged than the footage suggested she should. From there the objections multiplied.

• The makeup — her eye read as barely marked under stage lighting and full television makeup.
• The medical logic — commenters argued that being slapped doesn't produce a concussion, since concussions come from the brain moving inside the skull.
• The response — the ambulance on site struck some viewers as disproportionate to what they'd seen.
• The timing — an injury exit in episode three, in a competition built around weekly eliminations, invited the obvious suspicion.

What she posted

Jolley answered on TikTok with photographs taken during treatment, showing the bruising without broadcast makeup on it.

"Never thought I would need to prove to the internet that I did indeed get smacked hard enough to get a black eye and concussion... for those saying it didn't look bad from the show, they covered it up with makeup!" she wrote, adding that people should "be kind and respectful, especially when you don't know the full story behind the scenes."

Two days after the elimination, on July 29, she posted a longer statement on Instagram saying she had done everything in her power to stay in, and that the decision belonged to the medical team rather than to her.

"If there's one thing this experience has taught me, it's to do the scary thing," she wrote.

Where it left everyone

Stephani Sosa apologized off camera and again in a confessional. Her brother, DWTS pro Ezra Sosa, publicly backed her, pointing out that rehearsal collisions are routine in this line of work, and the siblings filmed a joint TikTok about it. A share of commenters remained unconvinced regardless of the photographs.

The season ran to its finale on August 31, 2026, with Adele, AJ Pritchard, and Selena Hamilton as the final three.

For the record: Jolley left the show attached to Jake Monreal, a fellow contestant who had been eliminated back in episode one. He was gone first; she was gone third; they both got something out of Brisbane.
