What happened to Elle on Criminal Minds? She left in season 2, and twenty years later the show still hasn't brought her back
What happened to Elle Greenaway on Criminal Minds — the three episodes that ended her time at the BAU, the explanation a producer gave for Lola Glaudini's exit in 2006, and why the franchise's revival era has brought back nearly everyone except its first departing profiler.
Before Prentiss, there was Elle. When Criminal Minds premiered on CBS on September 22, 2005, Lola Glaudini's Elle Greenaway was in the original team photo — a Supervisory Special Agent specializing in sex crimes, positioned as one of the ensemble's leads. She lasted 28 episodes. Two decades and one franchise revival later, that number hasn't moved.
The three episodes that ended her run
Elle's departure wasn't a single scene; the show built it across two seasons:
- "The Fisher King, Part 1" (season 1 finale ) — the unsub Randall Garner tracks Elle to her home and shoots her, leaving her to be found bleeding on her own floor.
- "Aftermath" (season 2, episode 5) — back at work with untreated PTSD, Elle works the case of serial rapist William Lee. When the team's operation lets him walk, she confronts Lee alone and shoots him dead. It's ruled self-defense. The episode makes sure you doubt it.
- "The Boogeyman" (season 2, episode 6) — Elle returns to Quantico only to hand Hotch her resignation. That's the last time Lola Glaudini appears on the show.
After that: a couple of passing mentions and two flashbacks using existing footage. Glaudini herself never filmed another frame of Criminal Minds.

The reason, as stated in 2006
The only on-record explanation came from writer-producer Edward Bernero, who told the Los Angeles Times in 2006 that Glaudini was unhappy living in Los Angeles, where the show filmed, and wanted to return to the East Coast.
Glaudini has never publicly confirmed that account — not in 2006, and not in the twenty years since. Bernero's version stands mostly because nobody has offered another one.
There was no reported conflict with the cast or producers. Her seat didn't stay cold long: Paget Brewster's Emily Prentiss joined the BAU later that same season and eventually ended up running it.
Everyone else got a comeback
This is what makes Elle's case unusual. The franchise has been aggressively reunion-friendly. Shemar Moore returned as Derek Morgan for a season 13 guest spot after leaving in season 11. A.J. Cook was written out and written back in. The Paramount+ revival, Criminal Minds: Evolution, has been running since 2022 with Prentiss, JJ, Garcia, Rossi, Tara, and Luke — a show practically built on continuity callbacks.
Twenty years of anniversaries, revivals, and returning guest stars, and the BAU's first vacancy is still the one the writers have never reopened.
Where Lola Glaudini is now
Still working. Her post-Criminal Minds credits run through film and television, including the 2014 Zac Efron comedy Neighbors. She made headlines again in February 2024, when she alleged on the Powerful Truth Angels podcast that Johnny Depp had screamed at her on the set of Blow back in 2001 — her most-covered moment since Quantico.
For the record: of the seven agents in the 2005 pilot's credits, three made it to the 2020 finale. Elle was the first out the door, in October 2006 — and the only one whose door stayed shut.
