What happened to Ed Baldwin in For All Mankind? He got the death he'd been dodging for five seasons
Fans had been asking the same question since the time jumps started piling up: how is this man still alive? In April 2026, the show finally answered — and it did it beautifully.

How Ed dies
In season 5, episode 3 — pointedly titled "Home" — 81-year-old Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman) is revealed to have advanced lung cancer. His daughter Kelly (Cynthy Wu) pushes him to seek treatment. He refuses, because of course he does. Instead, Ed dies peacefully on Mars, surrounded by family, in control of his own ending right to the last breath.
The episode frames his final moments as a dream: a young Ed in his flight suit, walking a NASA hallway to applause, side by side with his long-dead best friend Gordo Stevens. Waiting at the end are Karen and their son Shane — both gone for decades in the show's timeline — ready to take him home.
The cameos that made it land
The returning ghosts were the episode's masterstroke:
- Gordo Stevens (Michael Dorman) — back for the first time since his character died in season 2, walking the final hallway with Ed.
- Karen Baldwin (Shantel VanSanten) — Ed's late wife, waiting at the end.
- Shane Baldwin — the son whose death in season 1 shaped everything Ed became.
Kinnaman told Variety in 2026 that shooting his final scene left him wrecked:
"I was a total mess."
He also asked the producers not to send him any scripts written after Ed's death — he wants to watch the rest of the show as a fan.
Why kill him now?
Season 5 is the penultimate season, and creators Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi told Collider in 2026 that Ed's death was planned seasons in advance — the groundwork was laid back in season 4, when his tremors ended his flying days. His passing hands the story to the next generation, especially his grandson Alex (Sean Kaufman), whose arc drives the back half of the season.
