What happened to Carrie in Little House on the Prairie? Netflix didn't just forget the third Ingalls sister
When Netflix started announcing the cast of its Little House on the Prairie reimagining, fans did a headcount: Laura, Mary, Ma, Pa — and no Carrie. The alarm spread fast enough that one viewer straight-up asked TVLine whether the youngest Ingalls sister was being "retconned out of existence."
She wasn't. The show just had a longer game in mind.
The short answer
Carrie doesn't appear at the start of the series because she hasn't been born yet. The Netflix version, which premiered on July 9, 2026, follows Laura Ingalls Wilder's book timeline more closely than the 1974–1983 NBC series did — and in that timeline, the family arrives in Kansas as a family of four.
"When the series opens, Carrie simply has not been born yet," sources close to the production told TVLine in 2025.
She arrives sooner than you'd think
Watch episode 1 closely and the setup is right there: Caroline (Crosby Fitzgerald) discovers she's pregnant. By episode 6, baby Carrie — short for Caroline — is born during a snowstorm at Christmas, arriving as a small miracle while the family battles fever and hardship. She's the first Ingalls child born on the prairie.
Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine pulled that directly from history — "Carrie was born on the prairie," she noted to Netflix's Tudum in 2026 — and built the season around the family's longing to grow. The real Caroline Celestia Ingalls was born in August 1870 in Montgomery County, Kansas, during exactly the period season 1 covers.
Why the confusion happened
Blame the original show. On NBC, Carrie (played by twins Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush) was present from the very first episode, because that series started later in the family's story and shuffled the books ' order freely. Anyone raised on reruns reasonably expected three sisters in the wagon from day one.
The Netflix series made other changes too:
- The setting — season 1 takes place in Independence, Kansas, in the 1870s, not Walnut Grove.
- The Olesons — Nellie and family are absent from season 1, with Nellie planned for season 2.
- The destination — the finale 's prairie fire pushes the Ingalls family toward Plum Creek, Minnesota, right where the books go next.
