What followed Ethan Hawke’s first Oscar nomination? “A personal disaster zone.”
Ethan Hawke is looking back at the career peak that collided with a painful chapter—and he says the rush of fame upended everything around him.
During a recent sit-down for GQ’s One More Question with Zach Baron, Ethan Hawke didn’t hesitate when asked if his first Oscar nod marked a beginning or an ending. He went straight back to the moment after Training Day, when acclaim crashed into real life.
“That was like a professional high watermark that then quickly turned into a personal disaster zone,” Hawke said.
Hawke’s turn as rookie cop Jake Hoyt opposite Denzel Washington’s Alonzo Harris earned him his first Oscar nomination in 2002 and a jolt of commercial momentum. But he said fame can turn every mistake into a public spectacle, and that being candid about it still scares him.
“The world’s cold and mean,” he said.
He and Uma Thurman met making Gattaca and married in 1998. They separated in 2003 and finalized their divorce in 2005.
About that Moon Knight ending
Hawke later stepped into the MCU as Arthur Harrow, the devout cult leader who literally put broken glass in his shoes in Moon Knight (2022), playing opposite Oscar Isaac. The show’s post-credits button left Harrow in a bad way: Isaac’s alter Jake Lockley whisked him out of a psychiatric hospital, loaded him into Khonshu’s limousine, and shot him offscreen.
Marvel hasn’t said Harrow survived — or that Hawke will be back — and Hawke isn’t hanging his hat on a return. He joined the series largely out of friendship with Isaac and curiosity about the cultural juggernaut.
“They were really good to me,” Hawke said, noting that Marvel’s streaming plans evolved differently than he once expected.
As of now, Marvel hasn’t announced a second season of Moon Knight, and there’s no official word on Harrow’s fate or a Hawke comeback.
