Tom Holland Credits Insomniac’s Spider-Man Games for Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Wildest Action Scenes
Tom Holland reveals that Insomniac’s Spider-Man games helped shape the action — and those finishing moves — in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but what exactly did he take from them?
At the film ’s premiere, Tom Holland said the new movie ’s fight scenes pull straight from the PlayStation. He told IGN he’d recently replayed Insomniac’s games while the stunt team combed through “finishing moves,” studying how to translate the flashier combos into something that works on a real set.
“Yeah, for me a lot of those like finishing moves. A lot of our stuff was influenced by that stuff,”
According to Holland, several stunt performers are avid gamers who grabbed screenshots from the Insomniac’s Marvel ’s Spider- Man titles and brought them into the writers’ room as reference. The idea was to keep the fluid, combo-heavy feel fans know from the games while still grounding it in Peter’s more street-level world after No Way Home.
The result, he said, is a blend of cinematic choreography and instantly recognizable Spidey beats — the kind of moves longtime players will clock the moment they hit the screen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day .
Behind the camera?
Holland also hinted his Marvel future might not be limited to acting. In a rapid-fire yes-or-no interview with Hugo Travers for HugoDécrypte – Grands Formats — filmed with Zendaya — he didn’t shut down the idea of calling the shots himself.
“Yeah, I guess I could,”
he answered when asked if he would ever direct a Marvel movie. He’s already stepped deeper into the creative process on Brand New Day, confirming he took part in the film’s writers’ room.
As for what comes after this chapter, Holland declined to answer when asked about returning for Spider-Man 5. Marvel hasn’t announced a fifth film, and while industry insider Alex Perez has suggested Holland’s current deal could extend beyond the trilogy, that remains unconfirmed. Marvel has yet to confirm a fifth film.
