Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf’s on-set tension was just the start — and there’s a twist in their rivalry you probably didn’t expect.

On the set of Lawless, the bootlegging drama that paired Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy as Bondurant brothers, an off-camera scuffle turned into one of those enduring behind-the-scenes stories where no two people tell it the same way. One version has Hardy out cold. Another insists he knocked himself out tumbling down stairs during horseplay. The director says there was a fight, but no clean knockout.

Three clashing accounts

  • Tom Hardy — 2011 interview : Told Den of Geek he was knocked unconscious by LaBeouf.
  • Shia LaBeouf — Hot Ones (2019): Said Hardy likes to tell that story as a joke, claiming Hardy crashed down a flight of stairs during a wrestling bit after barging in while LaBeouf was naked with his girlfriend.
  • Director John Hillcoat — Reddit AMA: Denied a LaBeouf KO, but confirmed there was a physical altercation that escalated until others stepped in to restrain them.
“He knocked me out sparko. Out cold. He’s a bad, bad boy. He is. He’s quite intimidating as well. He’s a scary dude.”

Hardy’s “out cold” line came before the movie even hit theaters, in a 2011 chat with Den of Geek. LaBeouf later countered on Hot Ones that the two men often messed with each other on set and that the only reason anyone saw Hardy on the ground was because he’d slipped during their roughhousing.

Adding a referee’s take, John Hillcoat weighed in during a Reddit AMA: there was no clean knockout, but there was a real fight and it got heated enough that others had to separate the stars.

Another on‑set clash

Hardy’s name has popped up in other set-showdown stories, most famously on Mad Max: Fury Road. During the grueling Namibia shoot, he and Charlize Theron clashed over working styles — she prized punctuality and precision; he developed a reputation for turning up late.

The breaking point, per accounts from the production, came when Hardy arrived roughly three hours late to a scene, leaving Theron waiting inside the War Rig in full costume. A screaming match followed, and Theron has said she asked a female producer to accompany her after that because she felt uncomfortable around Hardy. They eventually patched things up, but the blowup remains part of the film ’s desert-lore.
