Moving to another country, reconnecting with old friends and leaving your old life behind.

Those who lost their jobs, their homes, their families, were trapped, but despite everything, they rose to a new life. We have selected films whose characters prove that every fall can provide the energy for a jump up.

1. Nomadland, 2020

Fern loses her job at the factory. She worked there all her life with her husband, who died several years ago. She decides to sell almost all her belongings, buy a van and become a nomad.

The movie tells about the life of modern nomads – people who have been rejected by society: the old, the sick and the poor.

At the same time, their lives do not seem unhappy, on the contrary: Fern makes new friends, is immersed in the rituals of the van owners and falls in love. The movie not only motivates not to be afraid of new things and one's own desires, but also warns against prejudice and judgment.

2. Demolition, 2015

Successful financier Davis loses his wife in a car accident. But instead of grief, pain and sadness, he feels only emptiness. In an attempt to cope with his condition, he begins destroying everything around him and writes letters to the vending machine's support service.

Soon, Karen, an employee who reads his messages, contacts him. Davis begins to bond with her and her teenage son.

The events of the movie revolve around a not very positive character. The death of his wife became a reason for him to look inside himself and he was horrified by what he discovered – an endless emptiness. However, it is this tragic event that allows Davis to begin to live and not just exist as he had before.

3. Sideways, 2004

Two old friends, literature teacher Miles and former sitcom actor Jack, go on a week-long bachelor party in the wine country of California. Along the way, it turns out that Miles is suffering from depression and can't get his ex-wife out of his head.

And Jack is not so happy about his upcoming wedding and wants to party like it's the last time. But there is no problem that an endless amount of wine and two girls from Santa Barbara cannot solve.

Sideways is a heartfelt and sentimental dramedy about two men going through a midlife crisis. The main character, played by Paul Giamatti, is terrified of leaving his comfort zone. A new girlfriend and an old friend help him start a new life.

4. The Worst Person in the World, 2021

Thirty-year-old Julie, despite her apparent maturity, cannot make a single decision. She is torn between a career as a doctor, a photographer, a journalist and two guys.

Aksel is a famous cartoonist, 15 years older than her, intelligent and clever, but a bit boring. But Eivind is much more like Julea herself: they are the same age, get by with temporary jobs and do not know what they want from life.

In Joachim Trier's movie, Julie starts all over again more than once or twice. But each choice seems wrong to her: she loses much more than she bargained for. In the end, however, the woman comes to the conclusion that her path could not have been any different.
