The Walking Dead nearly lost Jeffrey Dean Morgan, he reveals
Jeffrey Dean Morgan nearly bailed on The Walking Dead: Dead City—and he’s explaining why.
After wrapping Season 2 of The Walking Dead: Dead City, Jeffrey Dean Morgan says he picked up the phone and told AMC he was ready to walk away from Negan. Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Morgan explained that the character had drifted too far from what made him compelling.
“All I did was cry, and he’d lost his charisma and everything that made him Negan.”
Morgan called it a rare move for him to contact the network directly once filming finished. But he felt strongly enough to deliver a blunt message.
“I can’t do it like this anymore.”
According to Morgan, AMC executive Dan McDermott didn’t just accept the complaint — he invited a fix.
“Before you run off, Jeff, is there a way we can shift this?”
That opened the door to conversations about recalibrating Negan’s arc. Lauren Cohan joined those talks, with Morgan saying the Maggie–Negan dynamic had gotten too boxed-in: Maggie stuck in revenge mode, Negan stuck in survival mode protecting Hershel. He pushed for a relationship that could evolve beyond those grooves.
From “aged out” to a hot streak
Morgan also looked back at a time when his career seemed over. In his mid-30s, he says his longtime manager dropped him and told him he had “aged out” of the business. Then, within roughly a week, everything flipped: three major TV calls came in.

The Grey’s Anatomy arc became the game-changer. Morgan called Denny’s storyline “lightning in a bottle” and credited the show with shifting the entire trajectory of his career.
That resurgence ultimately led to Negan — and to Morgan being a frequent fan pick to play Arthur Morgan if Red Dead Redemption 2 ever goes live-action. For now, there’s no announced movie based on the game.
