Vaughn W. Hebron's Barry Hallsen — son of White House butler Richard, father of four-year-old Callie — leaves home and cuts off contact at the end of season 3, in the March 22, 2022 finale "Road Kill." Viewers then spent the better part of two years watching other characters slowly catch up. Here's the sequence, because Tyler Perry took his time with it.

Barry was killed by the Rakadishi cult, the same group that kidnapped his daughter and that carries over from Perry's series Ruthless. The Highest, the cult's leader, later confesses to it directly. Barry's body was left in Kareem Richardson's bedroom, which made Kareem look like the killer and set off everything that follows.

Kareem finds a body and makes it worse

Kareem walks into his own apartment and finds Barry dead on the floor of his bedroom. He does not call the police. He kicks Dale out of the pharmacy, stonewalls Sharon, and eventually enlists help to bury the body — behavior that reads as guilt to every single person around him.

Hebron was credited on 106 episodes of The Oval between 2019 and 2025 — a decent number for a character who spent a third of that run as a rumor.

Sharon finds Barry's bloodied phone and hides it. When Kareem tries to keep her from leaving his apartment, she fights him off and beats him badly enough that he needs medical attention.

Why confirmation took until season 5

  • Season 4, early 2023 — Richard learns from cult members who show up at his house that they killed Barry.
  • Season 4 finale, March 2023 — Sharon tells investigators that Kareem confessed to the killing. Police tell Richard they've found a body carrying Barry's belongings. Nancy attempts suicide.
  • Season 5, November 2023 — Richard goes to the morgue to identify his son. It isn't Barry, even though that was the body from Kareem's apartment.
  • Season 5, February 2024 — In "Breaking News," Richard, Nancy, Sam and Priscilla are formally told Barry is dead and that an investigation is open.

That last episode is the point at which the show stops hedging. Hebron marked it publicly, thanking Perry on Instagram for what he called his first shot at a career.

"I will always be grateful," Hebron wrote in 2025.

So was Kareem ever cleared?

The show keeps him in circulation rather than resolving it cleanly. He resurfaces in later seasons demanding money from Sharon, breaks into Richard's house, knifes him during a fight, and is shot several times by Priscilla. A memorial for Barry finally gets organized years after the death, which is about as close to closure as this particular storyline offers.
