The Electric State and 4 Other Most Anticipated Sci-Fi Movies to Be Released in 2025
A comedy from the director of Parasite, the long-awaited Tron, and the return of the Running Man.
Sci-fi has had a second life on streaming lately, but feature-length projects are not far behind. We've rounded up five of the genre's most anticipated films that you should definitely mark on your calendar.
1. Tron: Ares
Release Date: October 10, 2025
The events of the third Tron will take place in reality. Ares will come into contact with the human world to carry out a particularly important mission.
The third part of Tron was developed for more than ten years – it will reach the screens only in 2025. The main role in the movie will be played by Jared Leto. The return of Jeff Bridges, who played in the first two parts, is also expected.
2. The Electric State
Release Date: March 14, 2025
The action takes place in a retrofuturistic world reminiscent of the 1990s, but with the presence of unusual drones. The main character goes in search of her brother. On her journey she is assisted by a robot and a strange man.
The movie is based on the art book by the master of retrofuturism Simon Stålenhag – his book was also a source material for Tales from the Loop. The Russo brothers are responsible for the production – they worked on the last two parts of The Avengers. The lead role will be played by Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown.
3. Mickey 17
Release Date: March 7, 2025
Mickey Barnes joins a team that will colonize a distant planet. He has an unusual position – "expendable." Mickey is given the most dangerous tasks: every time he dies, his consciousness is transferred to a new clone. But one version of the man survives, returns to the base and meets his copy.
The movie is based on the book Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, the adaptation was directed by Parasite director and Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho. Robert Pattinson plays all the versions of Mickey.
4. The Running Man
Release Date: November 7, 2025
In the world of the future, people participate in survival games. Participants are hunted by specially trained killers, and viewers watch live on television. The main character is also forced to take part in the game – it is the only way out of poverty.
Edgar Wright is directing a new adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name. Glen Powell will play the lead role. Many viewers may remember the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the new version will be closer to the original source.
5. Bugonia
Release Date: November 7, 2025
The plot revolves around a young man who believes he has uncovered a secret alien conspiracy to destroy humanity. The protagonist takes the head of a pharmaceutical company hostage and subjects her to severe moral pressure in order to extract a confession.
Yorgos Lanthimos will reunite with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, who played in his Kinds of Kindness. For the first time in his career, the director is making a remake: the plot of Bugonia is based on the Korean film Save the Green Planet!
