For your scientific purposes.

In 1991, Diana Gabaldon published her first novel featuring time-traveling nurse Claire Randall. Since then, the Outlander universe has seen so many sequels, prequels, and bonus stories that it can be hard to keep track of it all.

Luckily, we have a guide to help you navigate the maze.

Just Give Me The Main Titles, Please

You got it! There are nine titles in the main Outlander series. An upcoming tenth novel will be released in the next few years, and is supposedly the last part of Jamie and Claire's story (though Gabaldon has said this before).

  1. OUTLANDER

The book that started it all! Outlander introduces us to Claire Randall, a combat nurse who visits Scotland with her husband in 1945. When she touches some mysterious standing stones, Claire is abruptly thrust back to the 18th century. There she must marry a strapping Scotsman, Jamie Fraser, to survive.

Then they have a lot of sex. Also to survive.

  1. DRAGONFLY IN AMBER

The second novel in the series moves back and forth between the 18th and 20th centuries. Claire has returned to her own time, and the book explores how she got there – it happened after she and Jamie traveled to Paris in an attempt to subvert history.

  1. VOYAGER

Twenty years after the events of Dragonfly in Amber, Claire discovers that Jamie Fraser did not, in fact, die on an 18th century battlefield. Determined to reunite with him, Claire returns to the standing stones and Jamie's timeline.

  1. DRUMS OF AUTUMN

Jamie and Claire have put all the drama behind them (HAHAHA!) and settled together in the mountains of the American colonies. Meanwhile, in the 20th century, their daughter Brianna stumbles on a piece of history that threatens her parents. She decides to travel back in time and find them.

  1. THE FIERY CROSS

Jamie, Claire, Brianna, and Brianna's family are now settled together on their 18th century American homestead. Claire acts as a reluctant prophet as she tries to keep her family safe from increasing unrest in the New World. Meanwhile, Jamie is called to form a militia.

  1. A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES

On the eve of the American Revolution, Jamie and Claire continue the fight to keep their family out of harm's way. Claire works as a nurse, while Jamie wavers between his oath to the British crown and his hopes for the future.

  1. AN ECHO IN THE BONE

As the American Revolution gathers steam in the 18th century, Roger and Brianna's son is kidnapped in the 20th. Roger races through time to find Jem, while Jamie and Claire go home to Scotland – and soon face separation.

  1. WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART'S BLOOD

After Jamie is believed to be lost at sea, Claire marries Lord John Grey for her own protection. Meanwhile, Brianna is still in the 20th century and fearing for the welfare of her husband and kidnapped child.

  1. GO TELL THE BEES THAT I AM GONE

Brianna, Roger, Claire, and Jamie are finally reunited. But the dangers of the past, the present, and the future are never far behind them.

More, Please!

If you've finished the main Outlander books, it's time to check out the spinoffs and bonus content.

  1. SEVEN STONES TO STAND OR FALL (Story Collection)

Seven novellas cover tales of John Grey, young Jamie Fraser, the parents of Roger MacKenzie, and more. The collection is 'Outlander adjacent', and you won't need it to follow the main Outlander plot. However, it is essential reading for all fans who want to understand the wider world of the books.

  1. LORD JOHN AND THE HAND OF THE DEVILS (Story Collection)

Three more novellas, all centered around fan-favorite Outlander character Sir John Grey. Here, Lord John swears vengeance on a murderer, investigates reports of a succubus on the battlefields of Europe, and uncovers a case of treason.

  1. THE EXILE (Graphic Novel)

It's turning into a 'thing' for authors to re-write romance stories from the hero's point of view. Luckily Diana Gabaldon had the foresight to at least tackle it in a different medium. Here, the first third of the original Outlander plot is told from Jamie's perspective. The gorgeous artwork is by Hoang Nguyen.

  1. PAST PROLOGUE (Short Story)

The anthology Matchup paired writers with each other and gave them a challenge: write a story where your lead characters meet.

Here, Gabaldon's Jamie Fraser meets Steve Berry's Cotton Malone – a former operative for the U.S. Justice Department.

  1. LORD JOHN AND THE PRIVATE MATTER (Novel)

It's 1757, and Lord John Grey has a lot going on. He's been witness to a shocking event in London's Beefsteak Club. He's trying to keep scandal away from his family. And he's been assigned to investigate the brutal murder of a friend.

  1. LORD JOHN AND THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE BLADE (Novel)

The Seven Years War is raging, and Lord John is pursuing a family secret and hidden love affair. As he struggles to figure out who he can trust, he reluctantly turns to the rugged Scotsman Jamie Fraser.

  1. THE SCOTTISH PRISONER (Novel)

The third Lord John novel spends more time with Jamie, who is mourning the loss of Claire (this novel takes place during their 20-year separation, while she is back in the 1900s). Jamie has sworn off politics, but Lord John has evidence of a crime that will see them reluctantly hitting the road together.

It will likely be a few more years until the final Outlander novel is published, but these titles should keep you busy until then!
