Monday’s season 4 premiere of Sullivans Crossing rips off the bandage: Scott Patterson is out as Sully, and Maggie, played by Morgan Kohan, rushes to keep the outpost on track as he heads to Ireland.

Well, that did not drag out. 'Sullivan's Crossing' opened season 4 by addressing the Sully-sized hole in the room right away, and the episode and everyone around it made it pretty clear this exit is messy on more than one level.

How the premiere writes Sully out (for now)

  • In the Monday, April 20 episode on The CW, Maggie (Morgan Kohan) says Sully 'just left' and tells Cal (Chad Michael Murray) she does not want to let things slide at the outpost while he is 'on vacation' in Ireland. She admits the whole thing took her by surprise and she is overwhelmed.
  • Frank (Tom Jackson) and Edna (Andrea Menard) also talk about Sully flying overseas, just to underline it is not a rumor — he is gone.
  • The opening credits quietly confirm it: Scott Patterson's name is out. He had been a main cast member; now the regular credit is gone.

What the show says vs. what Patterson says

Us Weekly reported back in March that Patterson, 67, would not be back as Sully. Showrunner and executive producer Roma Roth framed it as a story move: season 3 ended with Sully heading to Ireland to start a new chapter, and season 4 picks up literally the next day with him still overseas. The door, per Roth, is not locked — the character remains important and could appear in future seasons if the creative lines up.

Patterson, meanwhile, told a different story on Instagram, pointing to creative clashes and making it clear this was not his call. His post was blunt enough that it is worth reading as-is:

'The creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue.'

'It is unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite... I was not intending to make any statement but the fans of the books and the show deserve to know the truth.'

So, on one side: the writers say Sully is off finding himself in Ireland and could stroll back in later. On the other: Patterson says the behind-the-scenes issues hit a wall, and he is pushing back on any suggestion he was let go. Two very different reads of the same outcome.

How the series is handling the fallout

Chad Michael Murray, 44, kept things diplomatic in an April chat with Yahoo Canada, basically saying a lot of factors go into these things and the job now is to keep the show true to itself. He also stressed that Sully's presence is still baked into the place — he built the Crossing, his relationships are still driving people, and the show is not pretending he never existed. That tracks with the premiere, which spends time on the emotional whiplash his departure leaves behind.

The bottom line

The series wastes zero time acknowledging Sully is gone, folds it into the story cleanly, and leaves breadcrumbs that he could reappear if the stars — and the creatives — align. Off-screen, the messaging is not exactly in sync, which makes the whole thing a little awkward if you have been watching from the start.

Where to watch

'Sullivan's Crossing' is streaming on Netflix. Season 4 airs Mondays on The CW at 8 p.m. ET.
