The Bear Prequel Just Hit Hulu: A Marvel Reunion Takes Center Stage
Fans counting down to the fifth and final season of The Bear this summer just got an unexpected appetizer: FX and Hulu quietly dropped a surprise from the Emmy-winning team with zero warning or promotion.
Well, this is one way to make the wait for The Bear season 5 a little less painful: FX and Hulu just quietly dropped a surprise prequel episode. No trailer, no warning, nothing. Just... here you go.
So, what did they drop?
- Title: 'Gary' - a one-episode prequel to The Bear
- Who made it: Written by and starring Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal
- Director: The Bear creator Christopher Storer
- Timing: Set a few years before the main series
- Where to watch: It is streaming right now on Hulu (yep, FX on Hulu doing the thing)
- How it arrived: Completely unannounced, with zero promotion
What it is
'Gary' puts Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Mikey Berzatto (Jon Bernthal) back together for a before-Carmy adventure that digs into their dynamic pre-The Bear. The setup is deliberately simple and kind of perfect for these two: they are tasked with hauling a mysterious, aggressively taped-up box from Chicago to neighboring Gary, Indiana. Richie keeps pushing to know what is inside. Mikey refuses to say. Tension, banter, and questionable decision-making ensue.
The errand does not go quickly. They end up stuck in the small town longer than expected while waiting to make the hand-off. And there is an actual ticking clock: we find out at the top that Richie is still married to Tiffany, played again by Gillian Jacobs, and she is very pregnant with their daughter. So, not exactly the ideal day for a secret-box road trip.
The vibe
Moss-Bachrach posted about the drop on Instagram, sounding like someone who just got away with a fun heist:
"COUSINS! PRIMOS! CUGINI!!! Get ready for GARY!!!! We are so excited to finally share this little adventure with Richie and Mikey...Making this was a dream come true. Thanks to the beautiful people of Gary, Indiana and as always Chicago, Illinois. Search 'Gary' in HULU to watch."
If you are counting down to the fifth and final season this summer, this is a nice, unexpected detour back into the Berzatto orbit. I will update as more details shake loose, but for now: it is live, it is canon, and it is a stealth drop that actually feels like a gift.
