Sydney Sweeney’s latest film, The Housemaid, is turning heads with its impressive Rotten Tomatoes debut after a tough year at the box office. Discover how this adaptation is shaking up her 2025 and what makes it stand out from her previous projects.

After a challenging year filled with disappointments, Sydney Sweeney is back in the spotlight with her newest film, The Housemaid. Following the letdown of Christy, which was once hyped as an awards contender, this adaptation is being seen as her final opportunity to turn things around in 2025. Early reactions are encouraging, with the film currently boasting a 78% score from 41 critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Strong Start for Sweeney’s Latest Project

While critical scores can shift as more reviews come in, The Housemaid is on pace to become Sweeney’s most celebrated performance of the year. Although positive reviews don’t always guarantee box office success, the Euphoria star isn’t carrying the film alone this time. The cast also features Amanda Seyfried in a leading role, and the story is based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, which already has a devoted following thanks to its popularity on BookTok.

Built-In Audience and Box Office Potential

With a production budget reportedly set at $35 million, The Housemaid is projected to open with over $30 million domestically. That’s not surprising, considering the source material has sold around 4.5 million copies. Sweeney, who’s a fan of the book herself, shared her excitement about bringing the character to life, saying:

I think that it ’s going to be really exciting to see the movie come to life. I mean, I’m a huge fan of the book. So, being able to see all of these twisted elements and the secret smiles and how just dysfunctional this family has come to life is going to be really exciting.

Millie is really true to the book, which I was really happy about. Uh, she is just trying to figure out how to navigate a very, very complicated situation. And she finds herself in something way bigger than she thought she was prepared for.

Facing Stiff Competition This December

December is packed with major releases, including Zootopia 2 and the highly anticipated Avatar 3. However, The Housemaid is targeting a different crowd, which could work in its favor. If audiences respond positively and the film earns a strong Cinemascore, Sweeney may finally break her streak of underperforming releases and close out the year on a high note.

The Housemaid is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
