Sunrise and SHAFT team up for ‘FOOL NIGHT’; release date and story guide
An exciting Sunrise–SHAFT team-up is bringing FOOL NIGHT to life—what to expect and when it drops.
The new trailer for FOOL NIGHT lays out a bleak sci-fi pitch and a striking pedigree: it ’s the first-ever team‑up between two powerhouse Japanese studios, Sunrise and SHAFT, and Netflix is releasing the entire run in one go. The streamer also unveiled a moody key visual on November 5, hinting at a series that leans hard into survival, sacrifice, and body horror.
All episodes arrive November 26, 2026 on Netflix worldwide.
A future starved for air
The story, based on the manga by Yasuda, imagines a world where sunlight has been blotted out for a century. With plants dying and oxygen scarce, humanity turns to “Transfloration,” a procedure that implants seeds into the bodies of people near death, transforming them into oxygen‑producing plants. The moral cost is immense: you save the world, but forfeit your humanity.
At the center is Toshiro Kamiya, a young man scraping by while caring for his ailing mother. Crushed by taxes, medication costs and day‑to‑day expenses, Toshiro gets pulled toward Transfloration as a way out — a desperate choice that spirals into a larger mystery the trailer only teases.
First-time studio team-up
Sunrise, whose legacy includes Mobile Suit Gundam and Cowboy Bebop, joins SHAFT, the studio behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series, for the adaptation. Atsushi Yukawa directs, with Jin Tanaka on series composition and Robert Sato handling character designs.
The Japanese voice cast features:
- Koki Uchiyama — Toshiro Kamiya
- Minako Kotobuki — Yomiko Horai
- Junya Enoki — Akira Yatsuka
- Aya Endo — Saeko Kanaeno
- Kiyomitsu Mizuuchi — Jin Hiragishi
Music is locked: the opening theme is “Shake! spit out” by Tempalay, with Nowlu performing the ending song, “iki”. With the trailer and key visual out as of November 5, FOOL NIGHT joins Netflix’s growing slate of prestige anime alongside titles like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Pluto and The Seven Deadly Sins — and it’s built for a binge, with every episode dropping November 26, 2026.
