There are many exciting possibilities for Squid Game in the upcoming season.

Netflix knows a jackpot when it hits one. So it was only natural to expect more Squid Game installments after the wild global success of the first season of Hwang Dong-hyuk's survival thriller.

Rumor has it that there are plans for at least two more seasons, both of which have already been filmed. Or maybe we will get a longer Season 2 divided into two parts. In any case, the sequel is set to premiere this December, just in time for the holiday season.

Naturally, such a close proximity is sparking numerous fan speculations in various social media discussions. While the details of the upcoming story are being kept under wraps, one thing is for sure: Seong Gi-hun, portrayed by Lee Jung-jae, will return to try to destroy the deadly games.

However, how exactly he will go about doing this and what surprises the upcoming season has in store for him is up for speculation. Here are five mind-bending theories pitched by fans online.

1. Gi-hun Enters a New Game

Gi-hun will have to get close to the game to bring it down. We know that recruitment for the deadly challenges hasn't stopped. So many fans think that the protagonist will join a new battle as a competitor or an employee of the Front Man. Besides, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hinted in an Instagram post that Season 2 will feature a new set of games with a boyfriend of Young-hee, the now-iconic giant animatronic doll, in the center of one of them.

2. Gi-hun Joins the Battle of All Winners

The first look at Season 2 reveals that the game organizers are disturbed by Gi-hun's intention to interfere in their business. So there is a theory that they will create a grand battle and force all the previous winners to participate in it, hoping that Gi-hun will die in the process. In that case, the fFront Man will probably have to don the green suit himself. After all, he is also a former champion.

3. Gi-hun Finds Out He Is Oh Il-nam’s Son

This theory has been circulating in the fandom for years. Oh Il-nam aka Player 001 aka the creator of the deadly games mentions his son a few times in Season 1 and even draws parallels between him and Gi-hun. At the same time, the son never appears on screen, leading fans to speculate that the entire season one contest was designed to reconnect Gi-hun with his estranged, dying father.

Do you believe Gi-hun is Il-nam's son?

4. Gi-hun Becomes the Front Man

The Front Man's arc is intriguing and could serve as a foreshadowing of Gi-hun's own path. How could a former participant in the harrowing challenge agree to be its host? What if his motives go beyond mere greed for wealth and influence? Season 2 could explore this and show Gi-hun going through a similar journey.

5. Gi-hun Creates a Game For VIPs

Squid Game is first and foremost a mirror that reflects social inequality. And the VIPs, who fund the brutal competition, embody all that's twisted in society. If Hwang Dong-hyuk continues on this path, the most satisfying outcome would be to see these villains get a taste of their own medicine and be thrust into a life-or-death challenge organized especially for them.
