Christopher Abbott looks back on a gutsy early audition move that backfired into a very public lesson in Hollywood etiquette — and yes, it got awkward.

Before he was on anyone’s shortlist, Christopher Abbott once slipped into a packed casting session without an invite and tried to quietly learn the sides. He told Rolling Stone Studio there were roughly twenty actors in the room — all of them, unlike him, actually expected to be there — when the casting director suddenly called his name and demanded to know how he got in.

“Who sent you? Who are you with?”

Abbott had no agent and no appointment. He says he edged closer to the table to keep the exchange from turning into a show for the whole room, but the moment had already become a public grilling. Whether he ever got to read wasn’t the point — the lesson in audition etiquette landed loud and clear.

From crash to Professor X

Cut to the present: Marvel has given Abbott the most official invite there is. At D23 in August, Marvel Studios confirmed he’ll play Professor X — Charles Xavier, the telepathic founder of the mutant team — in director Jake Schreier’s upcoming reboot of X-Men, now dated for May 5, 2028. The role has previously been played on screen by Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy.

Abbott joins a young lineup of mutants and foes in the film:

  • Sadie Sink — Jean Grey
  • Kit Connor — Cyclops
  • Samara Weaving — Emma Frost
  • Inde Navarrette — Rogue
  • Maya Boyd — Storm
  • Adam Driver — Nathaniel Milbury

The casting caps a run that’s seen Abbott bring unnerving intensity to Possessor and Wolf Man, plus acclaimed stage turns including Death of a Salesman, after earlier TV work on Girls and The Sinner. Now he’s set to channel that steadiness — and edge — into Xavier when X-Men hits theaters May 5, 2028.
