Seth Green says he wasn’t in talks for the canceled Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot

On the podcast The McBride Rewind, Seth Green said there were never any formal talks about him reprising Oz for Hulu ’s scrapped Buffy revival. He did take part in an early script read at Sarah Michelle Gellar’s invitation — a private table read for executives — but he stressed that it wasn’t a casting conversation.

“I was not part of those talks,”

Green, whose mellow, “gentle wolf” Oz became a fan favorite during the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer run, added that he’s still open to where the character might be decades later.

“If they wrote an Oz story, I’d love to see where Oz is right now.”

The shelved reboot

The new project, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, was ordered to pilot at Hulu in 2025. It would have introduced a new Slayer in the lead while bringing Gellar back in a recurring role. Chloé Zhao was attached to direct and executive produce, with sisters Nora and Lila Zuckerman set as showrunners.

Before the plug was pulled, reports indicated the initial pilot was viewed internally as playing too young and too small in scale for streaming. A rewrite followed to make it bigger and more mature, but the project still stalled.

Gellar later told PEOPLE the pass caught her by surprise and criticized an executive involved with the project who, according to her, hadn’t watched the original series. Hulu ultimately decided not to move forward in March 2026 .
