Sean Gunn gushes over James Gunn’s 'Man of Tomorrow': “my favorite of all of them”
As Batman’s corner of the DCU quietly widens, Sean Gunn names his favorite of James Gunn’s superhero projects — and the pick might surprise you.
Pressed to stack up his brother’s superhero films, Sean Gunn wouldn’t spill plot details — but he did admit he’s already read Man of Tomorrow and put it at the top of James Gunn ’s comic-book work, ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad and Superman.
“But I think it’s okay that I can say that I’ve read it, and it’s my favorite of all of them.”
Gunn made the comment in a new interview with ComicBook.com, adding that he doesn’t see Marvel and DC as rivals and remains proud of the Guardians movies. The endorsement carries extra weight because Sean has been in the room for much of James’s superhero era — on both sides of the aisle — and keeps popping up inside the new DC Universe.
He also teased more to come for his DCU alter ego, Maxwell Lord, saying he’s already played the media power player in “a couple more projects” he can’t name yet. He described himself as “incredibly excited” about how the DCU’s pieces are starting to connect without needing constant crossovers.
Where Sean fits in DC
- Weasel — the feral oddball from The Suicide Squad
- Maxwell Lord — the slick media mogul introduced in Superman, with more appearances already filmed
Gotham, Clayface and the Batman question
The next clue to those connections may land in Gotham. James Gunn has confirmed Clayface takes place before Superman — making it the first DCU film to release out of chronological order — and stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, an actor whose brutal disfigurement leads to an experimental treatment and a monstrous transformation.
Because it’s set in Gotham, fans are naturally asking about Batman. The character already exists in DCU continuity, but no actor has been announced. Robert Pattinson continues as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves ’ separate Elseworlds line, while the DCU’s Batman is expected to headline The Brave and the Bold.
DC is also tucking in smaller world-building links. The Clayface trailer shows Matt on a Ferris Air flight — a nod to the company tied to Carol Ferris, who recently appeared at Hal Jordan’s funeral in Lanterns Episode 6 on HBO/Max. It’s the kind of connective tissue Sean hinted at: logos, people and history stitching the universe together.
As for Man of Tomorrow, DC has it on the calendar for July 9, 2027 , with David Corenswet returning as Superman.
