Sean Astin says a bad "The Lord of the Rings" deal cost him his house

Sean Astin says the paycheck for playing Samwise Gamgee didn’t match the fame that followed. In a new interview with The Guardian, he put a number on it — about $75,000 per movie across Peter Jackson ’s trilogy — and said the deal was so lean he ultimately sold his home.

“It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy,”

Astin added that the sudden global attention didn’t line up with the reality of his bank account.

“I was not prepared for that level of visibility and access,”

The actor noted the cast filmed the trilogy all at once, which meant no chance to renegotiate after the first film exploded. He said other ensemble members were in similar boats because the production was a gamble at the time, not a guaranteed juggernaut. Astin stressed he’s financially comfortable now — and if Sam ever returns, he’d negotiate very differently.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. ’ next trip to Middle-earth, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and follows the search for Gollum while digging into his fractured psyche. Andy Serkis is both directing and returning as Gollum.
