Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes Turns 16: Will a Third Film Happen?
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law’s dynamic take on Sherlock Holmes has captivated fans for over a decade. As the films celebrate their 16th anniversary and stream on Netflix, Downey Jr. finally shares why a long-awaited third movie remains elusive.
Some movies stand the test of time so well, it ’s hard not to wonder why they never spawned a full-blown franchise. Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes films, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the legendary detective, are a prime example. Now, as the first film marks its 16th year, both Sherlock Holmes and its sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, are available to stream on Netflix. Fans can revisit the gritty, action- packed world of Victorian London and the electric partnership between Downey Jr. and Jude Law’s Watson.
Downey Jr. Breaks Silence on the Elusive Third Installment
After years of rumors and speculation, Robert Downey Jr. has finally addressed the status of a potential third Sherlock Holmes movie. During a recent screening event for Play Dirty, he offered a rare, candid update on why the project has stalled, despite coming close to production at one point.
Downey Jr. explained that an earlier version of the film nearly moved forward, but scheduling conflicts with Jude Law became a major obstacle. Reflecting on it, he’s actually relieved that version didn’t happen, believing it wouldn’t have done justice to the characters or the fans.
God, that is loaded. How much do I give? We came pretty close at one point, and I think I am grateful that we didn’t make that version of it. I won’t go into what that was, which isn’t meant to sound cryptic. It just didn’t work out timing-wise, because we couldn’t get it in before Jude [Law] was going to be unavailable.
I think it was a good thing that we all stepped back. And then there was a big old pandemic and all that kind of stuff. I would love to bring a third Sherlock to the world. I really would. And we’ve been playing with it for a long time.
Even after the initial setback, the team tried to push the project forward, but the pandemic forced everything to a halt. Despite the delays, Downey Jr. made it clear his passion for the character hasn’t faded, and he’s still eager to bring a third film to audiences.
Why Downey Jr.’s Holmes Still Has Fans Hooked
It’s no mystery why so many are clamoring for another chapter. Downey Jr. delivered a performance that redefined the iconic detective, showing off a range far beyond his Iron Man persona. While Tony Stark is all about charisma and high-tech bravado, Sherlock Holmes demanded razor-sharp wit, emotional depth, and physical intensity—qualities Downey Jr. brought to the screen with style.
Portraying Holmes, a character known for his eccentricities and obsessive nature, is no easy feat. Downey Jr. managed to capture both the brilliance and the chaos, making the detective feel fresh and unpredictable. His chemistry with Jude Law’s Watson added another layer, turning the duo into one of the most memorable partnerships in recent film history.
