Reports of a UK return for the Sussexes have revived Meghan Markle’s old worries about UK schools.

Reports say Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are preparing to base themselves in the UK again later this month, with their children reportedly accepted to start school there in September. While nothing has been confirmed by the couple, British outlets have floated a few possibilities for where Archie and Lilibet might enroll, and which parts of England the family could call home.

  • Lambrook School — reportedly not on the list, despite cousins Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte attending
  • Schools in Northamptonshire — near King Charles’ Highgrove and the Spencer family’s estate
  • Windlesham House School — a co-ed day school in their dukedom of Sussex

Privacy worries resurface

The school chatter bumps up against Markle’s own on-the-record concerns about sending her kids to school in Britain. In a 2022 interview with The Cut, she pointed to tabloid attention and photographers posted outside school gates as a dealbreaker.

“Sorry, I have a problem with that. That doesn’t make me obsessed with privacy. That makes me a strong and good parent protecting my child from a royal press photo call of 40 people,” she said in an interview with The Cut.

Coverage framing the move notes it would come “after six years away” from both the UK and royal life, and reports also suggest the family would live on the outskirts of London, though their exact UK base is being kept private. The pair are expected to keep their Montecito home and a reported summer spot in Portugal.

Are Harry and Meghan on the same page?

Per a report dated August 12 from Closer, the couple may not be fully aligned on education plans. Archie and Lilibet have grown up in Montecito since their parents stepped back from royal duties in 2020, and the magazine’s source claims Markle favors the children finishing school in the U.S., citing her comfort in Los Angeles and saying England’s “stuffiness” never appealed to her. The report also notes the siblings’ two-year age difference has prompted discussions about different schools.

Separately, British reports say King Charles and the Waleses were notified of the potential return only days ago; the state of Harry and William’s relationship remains unclear. The Sussexes have not issued an official statement about the move or the children’s schooling.
