"Paycheck to paycheck," says Zachary Levi — despite Hollywood millions
Think a hefty Hollywood paycheck equals financial security? Zachary Levi says not when the monthly bills stack up—and he spells out why.
On the PBD Podcast, Zachary Levi dug into the less glamorous side of movie- star money, saying the steady checks from Chuck and Shazam! haven’t turned into the kind of cushion people assume. He pointed to his ongoing expenses as the reason he still feels financially tight.
“In many respects, because of my monthly nut and everything that I’m doing, I’m also paycheck to paycheck in some ways,” he said.
Levi also compared his situation to ultra-wealthy figures and the freedom that comes when money truly stops being a factor.
“I don’t have the escape velocity that Elon or Joe Rogan or people have,” he declared.
He added that he doesn’t think money should be the deciding factor in every major choice, urging people to consider what actually matters to them beyond the spreadsheet.
What he’s been paid
Levi’s comments land against some headline paydays from his biggest roles. Reported figures paint this picture:
- Shazam! (2019) — reportedly $1–$2 million upfront; the movie grossed over $365 million worldwide.
- Chuck — reports suggest up to $90,000 per episode at the show’s peak.
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) — he returned as the DC hero; his salary wasn’t publicly disclosed.
For Levi, the takeaway is less about any single check than the difference between earning well and having enough wealth to feel truly secure. His most recent turn as Shazam came in 2023 with Fury of the Gods.
