Paul Bettany on Robert Downey Jr. taking over his MCU milestone: 'He stole my legacy'
Paul Bettany just weighed in on a left-field Marvel shuffle, right as Robert Downey Jr. hit a career peak — kickstarting some friendly one-upmanship between the MCU vets.
While chatting with critic Ali Plumb on BBC Radio 1 about his new Marvel series VisionQuest, Paul Bettany leaned into some friendly MCU rivalry. With headlines swirling about Robert Downey Jr. returning to the franchise — reports have linked him to Doctor Doom in an Avengers film reportedly titled “Doomsday” — Bettany cracked that his own longevity record might be in danger.
“I was [the longest-running person in the MCU] for a moment... He stole my legacy, as he has stolen so many other things from me. Maybe I still outlast him. We’ll see,” he said.
Bettany’s been in the Marvel trenches since 2008, first as Tony Stark’s AI, J.A.R.V.I.S., before stepping onscreen as Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). He’s also been one of Downey’s most vocal champions, saying in past interviews that Downey deserved an Oscar nomination for Avengers: Endgame and arguing that bias against superhero movies likely stood in the way.
Inside VisionQuest
Jokes aside, Bettany says VisionQuest is built around weightier questions. In a separate interview with KGET, he likened Vision’s arc to the classic monster tale — a being rebuilt and then forced to figure out what that means.
“Who am I? Who made me? What am I for? What’s my purpose? Am I good? Am I bad?” he explained.
The series pulls Vision back into the orbit of his deadliest connection: Ultron. Bettany confirmed James Spader is back, and teased how their dynamic reframes the show’s ideas about artificial intelligence — from J.A.R.V.I.S. enhancing humanity to Ultron threatening it.
“There’s nothing so good as an abandoned plan,” Bettany said, praising how often Spader surprised him on set.
- James Spader — Ultron: the villain’s consciousness has long been intertwined with Vision’s programming
- Thomas Shepherd: a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son introduces a father–son thread
- AI in conflict: the show contrasts J.A.R.V.I.S.’s human partnership with Ultron’s extinction-level ambitions
That collision of family mystery and machine morality is the canvas for Bettany’s return — and the latest twist in a tenure that started as a voice in Tony Stark’s ear and keeps evolving, no matter who else finds their way back to the MCU.
