VisionQuest’s mystery matchup has an answer — and you’ll get a reality check on Paladin’s power, too.

He doesn’t tiptoe into the story. In the opening hour of VisionQuest, the mercenary known as Paladin moves on Vision and the mission turns deadly, with Fiona killed in the crossfire. He’s not freelancing: Paladin reports to a handler, Dianne Morgan, and is taking cues from the shadows — Ultron is secretly in contact with him. When Paladin uncovers something even Vision hasn’t, that his son Tommy is alive, he gets there first and stashes the boy at Saint Mabyns, an asylum, turning a manhunt into leverage.

That escalation fits where the show has Vision now — marked with a bounty, hunted by forces that want to turn him back into a weapon. The series reframes Paladin as part of a centuries-long lineage of professional hunters who take contracts on heroes and villains alike, and the job on Vision isn’t just about a paycheck.

“We don’t know who is behind it, but for Paladin, it is more than just a job. It is more than just a contract… it is a blood oath,” showrunner Terry Matalas said during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas.

From page to screen

Paladin’s comics history starts in 1977 on Gil Kane’s cover to Daredevil #150, billed there as a “man-stalker” who could read as hero or villain depending on the day. Inside the issue, writer Jim Shooter set him up with the classic Marvel swerve: he brawls with Daredevil before realizing they’re chasing the same target. Over the years he popped up as an honorable anti-hero, but Marvel Comics never gave him much backstory — a blank space the show uses to build out his family line of hunters and their code.

What he can do

On the page, Paladin isn’t superpowered — which is exactly why he’s scary. He’s the kind of operator who wins on preparation and precision. The show leans into that profile, with F.R.I.D.A.Y. flagging him as “trained in every art and every weapon.”

  • Elite hand-to-hand training and sharpshooter aim
  • Expert tracker who can tail a target through a city
  • Heavy on tactics: studies opponents, anticipates moves
  • High-tech gear: protective armor, specialized weapons, tracking tools

That profile tracks with his comics résumé — he’s fought Daredevil to a stalemate and taken contracts that put him against the Punisher and Elektra and still counted as a credible threat — and with the series beat where he pieces together Tommy’s fate before Vision does. Only two episodes have been released so far.
