Ozzy Osbourne Biopic Casts Top Actor as Heavy Metal Legend
Jack Osbourne confirms a 'phenomenal actor' will portray his late father in a new Sony Pictures biopic, with a director on board and script rewrites in progress. The film promises an unfiltered look at the rock icon's life.
The story of Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath, is heading to the big screen with a major Hollywood biopic. Jack Osbourne, Ozzy’s son, recently shared that a “phenomenal actor ” has been chosen to take on the role of the heavy metal icon. The project, which has been in development with Sony Pictures for six years, is now moving forward with a director attached and the script currently being rewritten.
Ozzy, known worldwide as the Prince of Darkness, passed away in July 2025 at age 76, just over two weeks after his final “Back to the Beginning” concert at Villa Park in Birmingham. He had battled Parkinson’s disease since 2019 and suffered from coronary artery disease, ultimately dying of a heart attack. Throughout the film ’s development, Jack kept his father updated on the progress, often sharing news about meetings and casting. Ozzy’s response was always the same:
“I don’t give a s***. Just tell me when it ’s out so I can go see it.”
Family Vision and Creative Direction
Jack Osbourne discussed the film’s progress on the Influenced podcast with Billy Morrison, explaining that the family is fully involved in the next phase of development. The Osbournes are determined to create a movie that captures the raw, chaotic, and passionate nature of Ozzy and Sharon’s relationship. Sharon Osbourne once described their bond as
“wild, insane, and dangerous, but it was our undying love that kept us together.”
While the original script was penned by Lee Hall, known for Billy Elliot, it’s unclear if he remains attached to the project. However, the family is adamant that the lead role should go to an English actor, reflecting Ozzy’s roots and legacy.
Rejecting the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Formula
Sharon Osbourne has made it clear that their film will not follow the path of other recent rock biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody or Rocketman. Despite Bohemian Rhapsody’s critical and commercial success, Sharon wants Ozzy’s story to be told with honesty and grit.
“Our film will be a lot more real. We don’t want it to be squeaky, shiny clean and all of that. We’re not making it for kids. It’s an adult movie for adults.”
She described Bohemian Rhapsody as a
“Hallmark rock movie,”
but acknowledged its role in introducing Queen’s music to new fans. Still, she insists the Osbourne biopic will offer a more authentic and unvarnished portrayal.
Legacy and On-Screen Moments
For those interested in the broader impact of music biopics, the Osbourne film promises to explore the complexities of fame, family, and the music industry. Fans can also revisit Ozzy’s memorable film appearances, including cameos in Little Nicky, the all-female Ghostbusters, and Austin Powers in Goldmember.
