Judd Apatow is bringing Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald to Netflix — here’s when it drops, who’s involved, and what it covers.

Built entirely from personal archives instead of talking-head interviews, Netflix is shaping its Norm Macdonald tribute as a time-capsule you live inside. The feature-length documentary, titled Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, leans on rare home videos, family photos and material shared by fans to trace the late comic’s voice and the way he worked. It ’s directed by Judd Apatow and carries an R rating.

Premieres October 16, 2026 on Netflix.

The film zeroes in on what made Macdonald Macdonald—his dry, unblinking delivery and love of the absurd—charting his evolution from anchoring Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live to a stand-up’s stand-up whose jokes unraveled long after the punchline.

Career touchstones

  • Writer — Early TV credits on Roseanne and The Dennis Miller Show
  • Star and co-writer — The 1998 cult comedy Dirty Work
  • Sitcom lead — The Norm Show (1999–2001)
  • Voice work — Appearances on Family Guy and The Fairly OddParents

Expect the film to nod to his winding start—studying math and philosophy before dropping out—then follow him into stand-up rooms, writers’ rooms and the many odd corners where his jokes found second lives.

There’s no traditional “cast” here; the subject is Macdonald himself. The filmmaking team builds the story from archival footage, personal photographs and fan-contributed clips and ephemera, aiming for an intimate look at a career that still resonates with comics and audiences alike.

Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald streams on Netflix starting October 16, 2026.
