A new documentary unpacks the Austrian scare that jolted Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour — and had millions of fans holding their breath.

Filmmakers are turning the Eras Tour’s abruptly canceled Vienna stop into a race-against-time feature: Taylor Swift Wien will retrace how intelligence services moved to shut down an alleged terror plot that scrapped those stadium dates at the last minute.

The documentary is now in production with directors Andreas Pichler and Veronika Kaserer at the helm. German public broadcaster ZDF is backing the project, with Germany’s Beetz Brothers and Austria’s Markand Media co-producing.

Inside the Vienna scare

Built around three interlocking threads, the film blends a security story with a ground-level look at Swifties who lived through it:

  • Authorities in multiple countries — including the CIA, Britain’s MI5, and Austrian and German agencies — intercepted the plot in time to prevent an attack tied to the planned shows.
  • Three Vienna-based female fans turned the shock of the cancellation into a local support network, even meeting with Austrian government and security officials as they processed what happened.
  • The investigation’s main suspect, reportedly a 19-year-old local of North Macedonian descent, is examined through court filings and reporting; per Variety, he allegedly swore allegiance to ISIS after being radicalized via social media platforms such as TikTok.

The Vienna dates were meant to be a celebratory stop on Swift’s globe-spanning Eras Tour before the promoter called them off amid the security scare. The film tracks that whiplash from anticipation to cancellation alongside the behind-the-scenes response.

Another Swift doc out now

While the Vienna project takes shape, The Tennessean has released a separate documentary marking 20 years since Swift’s 2006 debut: Taylor Swift: Finding Her Place in This World — Celebrating 20 Years of Her Debut Album. It revisits her Nashville beginnings — from early songwriting sessions to those formative nights at the Bluebird Cafe — and digs into the making of “Tim McGraw” and “Teardrops on My Guitar,” from the album that went eight-times platinum.

  • Rick Barker — Swift’s first manager
  • Liz Rose — early songwriting collaborator
  • Robert Ellis Orrall — early songwriting collaborator
ZDF is targeting an October 2027 premiere for Taylor Swift Wien, with an international rollout to follow.
