Netflix Loses Its Best Horror Replacement of Stranger Things by Guillermo del Toro This Week
A truly scary movie for all ages from the masters of the genre.
In 2019, the horror film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was released – an adaptation of the children's book series of the same name by author Alvin Schwartz. Guillermo Del Toro and director Andre Øvredal work in the space of James Wan, but fortunately do not fall into imitating his aesthetics.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, as its title suggests, is more in the tradition of R.L. Stine and other children's horror films that have absorbed the urban legends and characters of those midnight myths that children like to tell each other before bed.
What Is Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark About?
A group of teenagers, hiding from a school bully on Halloween, meet a boy named Ramon and take him to a local attraction – a haunted house that once belonged to a family of evil capitalists whose daughter went mad and started poisoning children in town.
Legend has it that her soul still lives in the house and, if asked, can tell a guest one of her gruesome stories, after which he will surely be transported to another world. Ramon, an observant, discovers a secret room in the house that no one has ever found before.
There, a girl named Stella, a wannabe writer and victim of complexes, finds a book by the same crazy girl with stories written in children's blood. Stella takes the book home, and soon the horror stories in it begin to come true.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Is Reminiscent of Stranger Things
From the very first frames, the movie is reminiscent of one of the major TV series hits of recent years, Stranger Things. The same small town, the same retro atmosphere, but instead of the 80s it is the end of the 60s with the corresponding references to cultural events.
In the movie, the style of the 60s is perhaps a little unnatural. But this is exactly how we are used to seeing it on the screen: wide, beautiful cars, curlers on the girls' heads, soccer team jackets.
And the plot corresponds to these feelings as well. Classic horror stories, reminiscent of old movie scripts, are connected with the help of several main characters who get caught up in a whirlwind of events.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Is a Perfect Horror Choice for the Whole Family
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a very simple but exciting horror for all ages. And it does not try to enter the territory of serious social statements.
The authors just wanted to entertain and scare the audience with eternal horror stories about soup with dead man's limbs, a haunted house and a living scarecrow, and they succeeded.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Is Leaving Netflix
