After 18 seasons and 392 episodes, Leon Vance is gone.

Rocky Carroll's character was killed off in the 500th episode — "All Good Things," aired 24 March 2026.

How it happens

The episode is structured as a mystery. Vance sits in a deserted NCIS office, questioned by a man (Adhir Kalyan) whose identity keeps shifting. Through flashbacks, we see the real story:

  • NCIS has been shut down and merged into the Army's Criminal Investigation Division
  • The team reunites off the books to investigate a weapons-smuggling ring inside the CID
  • Vance finds a bomb in the evidence locker and defuses it
  • CID Agent Dolan Thompson (Matt Cook), posing as an ally, shoots Vance in the chest

For most of the episode, Vance — and the audience — believes he survived thanks to a bulletproof vest. Then the interrogator drops the mask. He's the spirit of a young Ducky Mallard (Adam Campbell).

The "Clear!" Vance kept hearing wasn't agents securing the building. It was Dr. Palmer trying to bring him back. There was no vest. Vance is dead, and Ducky walks him toward the light — where he hears his late wife Jackie welcoming him home.

Was it Carroll's choice?

No. He found out in November 2025, two episodes before filming it. His first instinct was to ask whether Vance could leave alive, the way Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo did. Showrunner Steven D. Binder talked him through it — the 500th needed real stakes, and Vance dying to save the agency was the story they'd landed on.

Carroll has made peace with it: "If this had happened in my third season, I'd be devastated. But 18 seasons — that's the equivalent of living to be 105."

He'll continue directing episodes behind the camera, and flashback appearances haven't been ruled out. As for the show — Vance's sacrifice exposes the CID conspiracy, NCIS gets reinstated, and Parker (Gary Cole) comes out of retirement. But the director 's chair is empty, and filling it is one of the open questions for the rest of season 23.
