Chaos, thrills, and an unexpected turn are being teased for the next Mummy adventure — but the name behind the tease is what you’ll want to know.

On the red carpet at the 6th Annual Academy Museum Gala, Michael Johnston kept plot secrets close but confirmed one big thing about The Mummy: Book of the Dead: he’s not stepping into Alex O’Connell’s boots. Speaking to Deadline, the Obsession breakout said he’s playing a brand-new character written for the sequel, joining a reunion led by Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz .

Johnston also hinted his part is heavy on physicality. He’s been in boxing training for the shoot and described the production’s feel as classic high-adventure with supernatural stakes — in line with what fans loved the first time around. The movie is being directed by Radio Silence, the filmmaking collective known for high-energy, crowd-pleasing genre swings.

“It ’s going to be a load of fun. It’s a wild ride.”

What we know so far

  • Johnston’s role — A new character created for the sequel, not Rick and Evelyn’s son Alex.
  • Returning stars — Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are back.
  • Director — Radio Silence is at the helm.
  • Tone — Aiming to recapture the original films’ mix of adventure, danger and the supernatural.
  • Prep — Johnston says he’s doing boxing training for the action- forward role.
  • Story — Specific plot details remain under wraps.

It’s a rapid climb for Johnston, who led Curry Barker’s micro-budget horror hit Obsession — a $750,000 production that turned into a global phenomenon — before vaulting into franchise territory with The Mummy.

Beyond The Mummy

Johnston isn’t sticking to scares only. He teased an untitled drama he calls an “incredible queer story,” and also has work lined up on TV with 9-1-1, signaling a slate that bounces between big-screen action, horror, and character-driven drama.
