Marvel comeback, explained: Robert Downey Jr. says “let’s mix it up”
After that epic sendoff, Robert Downey Jr. says why he returned to Marvel — and the reason he gives isn’t the obvious one.
That gasp you remember from San Diego Comic-Con Hall H wasn’t a fever dream. On July 27, 2024, the mask lifted and it was Robert Downey Jr. staring out as Doctor Doom—a whiplash turn from his Iron Man farewell in Endgame and the spark for Marvel ’s next team-up, Avengers: Doomsday.
Why he said yes
Downey unpacked the decision on the studio’s Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday Official Podcast, a special tied to Avengers: Endgame, in a conversation with Ms. Marvel’s Iman Vellani. Asked what pulled him back into the MCU for a villain role, he didn’t hedge.
“What brought me back was the opportunity to redefine the genre of superhero movies. ”
He said the creative bet is one he’s making alongside Marvel chief Kevin Feige.
“We love a challenge and we figured, ‘Wow, let’s mix it up and see if we can get ourselves excited.’ Because if we’re excited, the audience will soon follow.”
A bet against burnout
Downey also nodded to the well-documented superhero fatigue after a run of underperformers, even as recent bright spots like Spider- Man: Brand New Day popped. Early signs are promising here: Marvel says Doomsday pre-sales are already breaking records ahead of release.
Behind the scenes, Feige has adjusted course, trimming the number of projects between Doomsday and the next mega-event, Avengers: Secret Wars, to refocus attention on the tentpoles.
Endgame back on the big screen
To crank up anticipation for Downey’s turn as Victor Von Doom, Marvel is sending Avengers: Endgame Encore back into theaters with brand-new teases and exclusive footage tied directly to Doomsday. The re-release is pitched as both a victory lap for the Infinity Saga and a first look at how Doom factors into what’s next.
