Louis Tomlinson Unfollows Zayn Malik After Reported Altercation, Fueling Rift Rumors
Louis Tomlinson has hit unfollow on Zayn Malik on Instagram — and sisters Phoebe and Lottie have dropped the Pillowtalk singer too — hinting at a fresh chill in the One Direction camp. The timing is unclear, but as of April 18 Tomlinson still follows his other former bandmates.
Well, this took a turn. Louis Tomlinson just quietly hit unfollow on Zayn Malik, and the timing is... not subtle.
The sudden unfollow
As of Saturday, April 18, Louis, 34, is no longer following Zayn, 33, on Instagram. It is not clear when he made the switch, but there is a ripple effect: Louis' sisters, Phoebe and Lottie, also do not follow Zayn (yes, the 'Pillowtalk' guy) anymore. Louis still follows his other One Direction bandmates — Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and the late Liam Payne. For what it is worth, Zayn was still following Louis at the time this all surfaced. The Sun flagged the social change first.
The reported dust-up
This comes one day after The Sun ran a story claiming Louis and Zayn got into a physical altercation while filming together. Emphasis on 'claiming' — none of the camps have publicly confirmed that, but the alleged incident was said to have happened on the set of their in-the-works docuseries.
The doc they were making
The project is an untitled, three-episode travel doc produced by Campfire Studios. Per a fall 2025 press release, the idea was to put Louis and Zayn on a road trip across the U.S. — part reconnection, part discovery, with a lighter tone — while also sitting down to talk about life, love, loss, fatherhood, and Liam Payne. For context, Zayn is dad to Khai, 5, with ex Gigi Hadid, and Louis is dad to Freddie, 8, with ex Briana Jungwirth.
A behind-the-scenes wrinkle
Director Nicola Marsh acknowledged The Sun's story on her Instagram Stories after it broke; multiple outlets grabbed screenshots before the posts expired. Where that leaves the doc now is anyone's guess. Media outlets have reached out to Louis, Zayn, and Campfire for comment, but the status of the series is currently up in the air.
How we got here
Louis and Zayn first met in 2010 on The X Factor, where they were grouped with Harry, Niall, and Liam to form One Direction. The band blew up globally, stayed a five-piece until Zayn exited in 2015, and officially went on hiatus in January 2016.
In 2017, Zayn said his relationships with the guys had shifted since the band days — less contact, more living separate lives — but that things were still civil. That same year, Louis told The Sun that he and Zayn had recently reconnected, nudged by advice from his mum.
'You have got to get back in contact with Zayn. Life's too f***ing short.'
Louis described their bond back then as a kind of brotherly rule-breaking partnership — complicated, but rooted in genuine care.
After Liam Payne's passing
When Liam died at 31 in October 2024, Louis and Zayn appeared in public together for the first time since Zayn left the band, reuniting with Harry and Niall at Liam's funeral. In a January interview, Louis said Liam's death brought the former bandmates closer again, though he was honest that keeping that going is hard when everyone is busy. He also said the dynamic varies person to person — with Niall, for example, he can go a year without texting and then meet up and talk nonstop.
